5 Years of Bitcoin Filmmaking

5 years ago, on September 6, 2012, we premiered our very first Bitcoin film at Berlin's legendary Room 77, the world's first brick-and-mortar store that accepts Bitcoin.

We showed a two minute animation that explains Bitcoin for Germany's #1 Bitcoin marketplace, Bitcoin.de. Its main protagonists are Dr. Münzmacher (that means 'Coinmaker' in German) and his sidekick, Herrmann, the Robot.

Dr. Münzmacher speaks English viz a hewy Görman akzent and explains Bitcoin in a typical German way. I wrote the script and directed the film and also spoke the characters (usually my accent isn't that heavy!). The animation was made by Vijay Dhanajeyan from Bangalore, the music by Claus Quidde from Berlin.

As Bitcoin.de uses the slogan "Bitcoin marketplace - made in Germany" we suggested to play with German stereotypes and make fun of ourselves, and they had enough humour to let us do this.

It was the first film we ever made for a crypto client. Since then we have created more than 30 films for all kinds of Bitcoin, crypto and blockchain start-ups, so we somehow became specialised in this.

Most people even think we chose our name Bitfilm because we are a Bitcoin film company, but we have been using this name since 1999, ten years before Bitcoin came into existence.

After that short movie screening, people stayed for the Bitcoin Stammtisch, a monthly meetup for Bitcoin and crypto enthusiasts, which happens every first Thursday of the month at Room 77 - which is today.

So if you are in Berlin, we might see each other there tonight!

By the way: there is one grave mistake in the movie. Can you spot it? I pay a beer at Room 77 for the first one who discovers it! Please use the comments for it!
