So, President Buhari announced that the new day for democracy to be celebrated is now June 12, the day the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria was conducted, I still have not experienced that kind of elections till date maybe in future I will but, I doubt it as long as we continue like this in Nigeria.

This declaration has been regarded by some people as a laudable action while some have criticised him and see this action as a political game; argument based on the fact that 2019 elections is just some months away. Isnt it in our best collective interests as a country when we say the truth as it should always be told?Picking a day to celebrate democracy is not democracy. In a country where there is no equality, where the voices of minority cannot be heard, where votes don't count and a country in which citizens are victims rather than subject of politics. A date for celebrating is completely absurd.

But why was the freest and fairest elections in the history of Nigeria annulled? It's good to know the history so as to understand the root of our political problems and how to tackle them.

The reasons Ibrahim Babangida annulled the freest and fairest elections of June 12, 1993 is still left unravelled till date. Well, reading history and following trend of how the same set of people in power during military era are still in power till date say it all. IBB never wanted to leave his position. This kind of behaviour is still what is seen in people overseeing the affairs of the country today.

In Nigeria of today, politicians would do anything to hold offices and to be in power before and after June 12. The people surrounding Abiola then left him to carry his cross in fighting the military. And this is still the problem, those that are in politics are in it because of their own benefits and not because of the nation's growth and development.

Well, the fact remains that until we start seeing a political office as a service, Nigeria will stay anti democratic.
