You need to understand what he's talking about before getting the whole message about this song. At first, I thought he was talking about a dead girlfriend. He used "he" in some parts, which got me confused. It wasn't easy telling if he was referring to a boyfriend or a girlfriend. I had to look at it from another angle. Let's take a look at the chorus.

Okay, you might think he's letting out his emotions to a girl. Your guess is wrong! The song isn't about him. It's about his late grand father who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He introduced that chorus after saying "Although my grandma used to say, he used to say:"

Her grand mother used to say those words - everything in the chorus. The "he" there is referring to his father. He didn't hear his grandma repeat those words. The words came from his father's mouth, so he's practically telling us what his father said about his grandma. Yeah, it's understandable from the verse before the chorus.

He was six when his grandfather died. I guess he loved the man very much at that age. The song was sang with so much passion and pain. Many people had a hard time figuring what he was talking about until he was interviewed. If you still don't know what the song entails, then this post is for you.

This is probably the last memory of him he had. This isn't a danceable song or a love song to be so crazy about, but I love every bit of it. Ed Sheran is one of my best artists and this is one of his songs I can't stop listening to. I listened to it more than twenty times the past week. It's my favorite song of the week.
