# First we should know what is a Witness?

Witnesses are those who build the blockchain for Steem processing all transcations and creating all new Steem deciding on which updates to apply and much more. 
Every account has the ability to be a witness. You can read about it more in @jerrybanfield post.

Every single Steemian has the privilege to vote for different witnesses, you have maximum of 30 votes. Just look for a witness who is really active and giving value to Steemit, contributing to it. 
@jerrybanfiled @gtg @jesta are the ones I voted for. And I recommend them to you too. The rest you can search for more on the website below and vote for them.

You can search for the witness with the username in the tab below and can vote him.

Participation in voting for the witnesses is really low, the graph shows the votes for witnesses.

Maximum of the Steemians do not know about this. So I urge them to educate yourself in that post by @jerrybanfield and vote for the witnesses.
