Spiders and Butterflies: A Collage for LMAC #94

What an adventure I've had this week in making my collage. The whole process was pushed back a day because I became interested in an idea that came to me as I was thinking through the piece. It began with @muelli's very impressive black [spider.](https://www.lmac.gallery/lmac_gallery/spider) I found the spider at the [LMAC Gallery (#LIL),](https://www.lmac.gallery/) where wonderful, copyright-free images may be borrowed by anyone on Hive. I wanted to put another creature in the collage, so I started to read. I discovered that a tiny frog in the South American rain forest cohabitates with a certain species of tarantula.

I decided to write a science blog. If you want to read about the amazing relationship between the Colombian lesserblack tarantula and the spotted humming frog, [here](https://peakd.com/hive-196387/@agmoore/can-a-tarantula-and-a-frog-get-along) is the blog.

The blogging detour reinforced my long-held conviction that art makes us smarter :)

As for the collage. It began with a stunning photo by @shaka:

Ordinarily such a picture would elicit from me a bucolic country scene. Not this time. I imagined a village at the bottom of the mountains and a giant spider covering the village with a web. First I put @doriangel's [village](https://www.lmac.gallery/lmac_gallery/village) in the valley. The picture of the village was also 'borrowed' from the LMAC Image Library (#LIL). Then I went to *GIMP* to make the web.

Now I had the spiders, the village and the web. The picture lacked color. Again, I went to the library and found @mballesteros' artificial [tree.](https://www.lmac.gallery/lmac_gallery/tree/0)

But still....I needed more. So I went back to gallery to find the perfect [butterfly.](https://www.lmac.gallery/lmac_gallery/butterfly) Thank you, @attom1515.

Wouldn't it be nice, I thought, to have a little movement? So I played around with *Paint 3D* to manipulate the figures, made frames, went back to *Gimp* and put the frames together in layers. My first animation looked like this:

![shaka 94 v.gif](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/agmoore/23vhz1iaJbAt7W4pKNWGmKpwbo2pZP4VxJvLjRY58RW3gZ3v3fbVfPTuFfLEeCx2nnD4Z.gif)

And then I ran the whole thing through a blend filter (on *Gimp*). The effect of that filter can be seen in the collage that appears at the top of this blog.

###
#LIL, Collages and the LMAC Community

To my knowledge, there is nothing like the LMAC Image Library on Hive. The project is ambitious. It stokes creativity, and will continue to do so in the years ahead. When I make collages from now on, I will use only elements from #LIL. All pictures in the library are donated by members of the Hive community.

Anyone who is reading this blog can contribute photos to the library. We need your photos. The richer the library, the greater its utility. In return, you, the reader, will have a resource of unique images to include in your blogs. Copyright-free images from people in the community.

Here is a [link](https://peakd.com/hive-174695/@shaka/the-lmac-summer-special-lets-build-the-lmac-image-library) to @shaka's post that describes how to contribute. The #LIL gallery is attractive, searchable and growing because of the efforts of @quantumg and @shaka. They have made a lasting contribution to the Hive blockchain with their hard work.

@shaka and @quantumg had the vision, talent and dedication to bring the gallery to life. Take a look. And then take another look next week. You will see our library grow by leaps and bounds.

You can see I had fun making this collage. You can also see that the exercise was intellectually stimulating. We at LMAC are a welcoming community. No skill required. Some people start off with skills. Some learn skills as they go along. Everyone, though, has fun.

@shaka is the founder and leader of LMAC. In this [post](https://peakd.com/hive-174695/@shaka/lets-make-a-collage-a-contest-for-all-creatives-on-hive-round-94-197-hive-in-the-prize-pool) he explains the rules for participation. Every week, people win prizes, though that is not why I participate. I don't compete. Making a collage is rewarding in itself.

I hope you [check out](https://peakd.com/c/hive-174695/created) the collages created for this week's contest. You will be astonished, I'm sure.

Thank you @shaka for creating LMAC, and for the world of opportunity that has opened to people because of it.
