"يحكى أنه في إحدى المقاطعات الأمريكية تم جلب رجل عجوز قام بسرقة رغيف خبز ليمثل أمام المحكمة ، واعترف هذا العجوز بفعلته ولم يحاول أن ينكرها لكنه برر ذلك بقوله : "" كنت أتضور جوعاً ، كدت أن أموت"".

القاضي قال له : "" أنت تعرف أنك سارق وسوف أحكم عليك بدفع 10 دولارات وأعرف أنك لا تملكها لأنك سرقت رغيف خبز ، لذلك سأدفعها عنك"".

صمت جميع الحضور في تلك اللحظة ، وشاهدوا القاضي يخرج 10 دولارات من جيبه ويطلب أن تودع في الخزينة كبدل حكم هذا العجوز.

ثم وقف فنظر إلى الحاضرين وقال : "" محكوم عليكم جميعاً بدفع 10 دولارات ، لأنكم تعيشون في بلدة يضطر فيها الفقير إلى سرقة رغيف خبز"".

في تلك الجلسة تم جمع 480 دولاراً ومنحها القاضي للرجل العجوز.

يقال أن هذه القصة حقيقية فعلاً وأنها وراء قصة كفالة الدول الحديثة للفقراء والمرضى فيها ، ومن هنا ندرك بأن رجلاً واحداً قد يغير فكر دولة بأكملها.
