As a gardener, one of my hobbies is to read seed catalog. Recently I read an interesting explanation about Swiss chard, which is called Mangold in German.

It means one plant feeds continuously a family of four. Wow! I saw some large ones in gardens but I wasn't sure one plant gives that much leaves. But today, I could believe it after I saw a giant one in an abundant area of the Leipzig botanical garden ... I'm not 100% sure it's Swiss chard though.

Swiss chard turned to be my favorite this summer. It's quite pest free, tolerant to climate, and useful in kitchen. It can be used as an alternative to spinach. So it can be in soup, quiche, gratin, pasta etc. When it's fried, it's perfect side for  meat/fish. I think I grow Swiss chard intensively next spring/summer.

種のカタログを読むのは趣味のひとつで、先日スイスチャードの説明を読んでいて「1株で4人家族を継続的にまかなえる」とあり、へええ！と。確かに結構大きく育っているのを他のおうちの庭やマーケットで見かけることはあるもののそこまでとは。

半信半疑ではないけれど、言葉半分に受け止めていたら・・・今日植木市を見に行った植物園の端っこでジャンボなのを見かけました。これなら4人家族をまかなえそうだ。といっても名札がなかったのでこれがスイスチャードとは限らないのですが。

スイスチャードはこれまであまり使わなかったのですが、今年育てる前に一度買ってみてずいぶん使えることがわかりました。スープ、グラタン、キッシュ、パスタ、炒めて肉や野菜のサイドディッシュに。ほうれん草の代わりのような感じで使えます。そしてなんと病虫害に強く、気候への耐性もあり。完璧 :) 来年の春夏園芸では1株と言わず、もりもり植えてご近所さんにも配れたらと思っています。
