It was the final day of WGT (Wave-Gotik-Treffen, one of the largest Gothick Fest in the world takes place in my city）), the festival I had been curious about for years, and I spent the afternoon walking around the city with my daughter. Every year around this time, Leipzig transforms into another world—filled with people dressed in the most incredible gothic outfits.

I’ve always loved sewing, and the idea of dressing up seemed like so much fun. In fact, I’ve been wanting to join WGT for about five-six years. But I hesitated, thinking, “Do I have to make the entire costume from scratch?” or “Maybe it’s only for serious people.”

My grandmother was a professional seamstress, and I grew up watching her work, playing beside the sewing machine, and making small things on my own. I truly enjoy making things—but somehow, when it came to WGT, I started feeling pressure. As if I had to create something amazing.

But this year, I finally did it. My daughter recently became interested in fashion and design, and as we started talking about costumes together, her excitement helped give me the push I needed.

While preparing, I recalled something I learned in a consultation session: “How do you want to feel?”

What I really wanted was to enjoy WGT. To enjoy wearing costumes and the atmosphere. To enjoy making things. If that’s the goal, then I don’t need to make everything from scratch. Customizing bought items is just creativity in a different form—not cutting corners, but embracing fun.

Once I realized that, the weight lifted and things came together quickly. And when I actually joined the event, everyone was so friendly and free-spirited. I found myself thinking, “I should’ve come years ago—so much easier than I imagined!”

At the same time, I believe this was the perfect moment. With my daughter’s involvement and the changes in myself over the past years, now was the right time.

So, what I took from this experience is a new motto:
“Go for it—lightly, easily, and joyfully.”

No more five-year hesitations 😅 

From tomorrow, I’ll be joining a Maker in Residency program in a neighboring town　Chemnitz, part of the European Capital of Culture festivities, where I’ll be designing vegan sushi with local ingredients with AI. Let’s keep moving forward!

ずっと気になっていたライプツィヒのイベント、WGTの最終日で、子供と街を見て回って帰ってきました。毎年この時期になると、街じゅうにゴシックな衣装をまとった人たちが現れて、まるで別世界のようになります。

私は洋裁が大好きで、コスプレも楽しそうで、実は5年くらい前から参加してみたいと思っていました。でも、「衣装を全部手作りしないといけないのかな」「本気の人しかいなさそう」などと思って、なかなか一歩を踏み出せずにいました。私の祖母はプロの洋裁師で、子どもの頃からミシンのそばでちょろちょろしたり、自分でも小さなものを縫ったりしてきました。作ること自体は楽しいのに、なぜかWGTとなると構えてしまっていたんです。すごいもの作らないと！と。

でも今年、やっと参加できました。子どもが最近ファッションやデザインに興味を持ち始めて、一緒に衣装のことを考えて、どんどん背中を押してくれたのも大いに助けになりました。

準備を始めてすぐに思い出したのが、本田晃一さんのコンサルで学んだ「感じたい気分は何？」ということでした。私が感じたかったのは、「WGTを楽しむこと」「コスチュームを着て楽しむこと」「作ることを楽しむこと」でした。だったら、衣装を一から全部作らなくてもいい。買ったものをアレンジしても、手抜きじゃなくて“工夫”だし、それも楽しいと思えたのです。

そう思ったら、気持ちがふっと軽くなって、準備がサクサク進みました。そして実際に参加してみたら、フレンドリーな人たちばかりで、自由で、もっと早くサクッと気軽に来てみればよかったなと。

一方で、今だったからこそ楽しめたとも思います。子どもの存在や、自分の中の変化も含めて、「今」がきっと最適なタイミングだったんだなと感じています。

ということで、今回学んだ「サクッと気軽に、楽しさ最優先で」をモットーに、5年も迷わずサクサクチャレンジしていきたいなと思うのでした。明日からはヨーロッパ文化都市の隣町でMaker in Residencyプログラムに参加して、地元素材のお寿司を作ってきます。どんどん行きましょう！
