7 years ago I started my recording studio business, Recording Box. You can read the very beginning of this story <a href="https://peakd.com/recording-studio/@alex-rourke/on-this-day-in-2017-i-was-finishing-the-paint-on-my-studio">here</a>. My main purpose at the time was to change the music industry in my city. I was going to serve seasoned artists and bands and I was going to inspire upcoming musicians to improve the quality of their recordings and production. Imagine that.

Revolutionizing an already complicated industry is ambitious to say the least, but if you’re willing to hold your ear to the ground and listen to what the market’s problems are, you’ll be able to figure out a niche problem and design a solution for it. In my case, I realized that businesses have a hard time creating high-quality, engaging content for their target audience. Many of them have marketing agencies, yes, but the agencies usually focus on graphic design and copy and don’t always have studio space ready to go on the drop of a dime. This is why companies and smaller agencies come to us.

## The Blue room

We’ve got “The blue room” which is something a lot of clients like. Blue is technology, it’s business, it’s a lot of things, and clients don’t have to pay extra to use it.

</div>

If they like the space, but want a different color background, we can have a custom backdrop made for them, like this all black one. These are super practical, but I’d like to upgrade them. More on that in a bit.

## The panel room

This is our main recording space. It’s got lots of acoustic panels covered in black fabric which makes all sorts of recordings sound great: acoustic instruments, singing and of course, podcasts.

One of the main benefits of keeping the wall white is that I can splash any kind of LED on it to change the look and feel. We also have a 52” screen where we can project a logo.

You might have seen a conversation I had with Starkerz and Buttcoins a while back. We recorded it in this room.

As you can see, with a little bit of LED lighting, I can easily change the whole look and feel of the space

---
While these two rooms alone give us a decent amount of versatility, I think we can step up our production game with a few upgrades this year.

Here are some of the upgrades I want to make in 2025.

### Top quality moving backgrounds

This is not super expensive to make and adds a whole new level of customization for, photography, podcast and YouTuber-style content creators. I can add wooden accents, as well as textures such as brick and even shelves.

### Expert lighting

Our recording spaces have either no windows or we’ve added blackout curtains so that we can rely exclusively on our own controlled artificial lightning. Most of the lightning we use is white LED panels that can be temperature-regulated or RGB panels to splash different colors on walls. The upgrade I’d like to do to our lightning set up is have more lights so that we can have several sets ready at once, which would allow for simultaneous recording and the other thing is

### Multiple sets at once

Having a few more lights is one thing, but being able to record on multiple sets at once will also require some extra cameras, recording equipment, cabling and crew. Who wouldn't want two paying clients at once? But one of the main reasons I'd like to have at least two rooms ready to go is so I can record some of my in-person videos more easily.

I can record videos like this right from my desk, but I need a camera, a microphone and at least two lights. All of these tools must be moved whenever I have a client in the studio. By having them permanently set up in my space, I could record whenever inspiration strikes and even when we've got clients in a different recording space.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://3speak.tv/embed?v=alex-rourke/gavmiriv" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It's not a huge investment, but one I'm not able to make at this exact moment and time without picking up a few more clients. I'm confident I can do that with a little bit of effort I can close the deal with a handful of fee-paying accounts and when that happens we'll pull the trigger on some of these upgrades.

### Network Attached Storage

This is something clients won't even know exists. But it's an incredible tool when audio, video and graphic editors are all working on a project simultaneously. It's basically a small server in a local network so that computers on that network can access project files and resources in one central location. [QNAP](https://www.qnap.com/en/solution/video-storage), who are amazing in creating hardware for video-production businesses like mine, even have options for remote collaboration. Like I said, this is not something our clients will see, but it will greatly improve our security, by helping us keep redundant copies of our files and it will improve turnaround speeds.

I'll keep you posted.
