Here you will find the answers to all your questions, first of all we must know what ADHD is and how it is diagnosed.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurobiological condition (sometimes hereditary or environmental such as prenatal, perinatal and postnatal) that is characterized by acts, behaviors or inappropriate level of concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity that is inconsistent with the level of development of the individual and that occurs in various environments of the life of the child and adolescent: in school, at home and in social contexts.

Sometimes we wonder why my kid goes wrong in school? Or why my kid does not have a minute of rest? Or simply why is my child so impulsive or aggressive with his/her peers? These are some of the indicators that should get our attention and think that something is not right with that behavior.

But not all ADHD is these symptoms can be confused with the behavior of a mischievous child or behaviors of their childhood or age.

ADHD is not mental retardation or lack of intelligence. Many people associate this disorder with lack of intelligence because with their disinterest in some cases it can negatively affect academic performance. ADHD can be seen in people with any level of intelligence.

How to know that it is not ADHD:

There is a difference when the individual is lazy or unmotivated, when their misconduct is intentional or when there is total lack of ability to fix and maintain attention.

In order to know if it's a case of ADHD and to be able to diagnose it, the criteria marked by the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition) must be presented, which are the following:

- It must be verified that the individual presents behaviors or some of them disproportionately in comparison with that of other children of their age and with respect to their level of development.

- These behaviors occur at early ages of their childhood (before age 12).

-That is affecting at least two different environments of the child's life: school, social and / or family.

- That the quality of life of the individual is becoming significantly impaired or deteriorated.

-Which are not consequences of medical problems, toxic or other psychiatric problem.

When there is suspicion that an individual has this disorder should go to a specialist in ADHD, and so this through studies will give an accurate diagnosis to avoid a misdiagnosis.

This is the easiest symptoms to recognize of the three, for its evidence and for being the best known by the general public.

Hyperactivity is characterized by:

- They do not stop moving even in the moments that are not suitable.

- They are never calm or when necessary.

- They talk a lot.

- They are very noisy children.

- They're never relaxed.

- They do not finish any activity and even then they start another one.

- They are not constant.

Hyperactivity can manifest differently in different stages of life, although the symptoms remain the same for children and adults.

Attention deficit.

The lack of attention is one of the most difficult symptoms to perceive at an early age.

The attention deficit is characterized due to:

- People who suffer from it cannot maintain attention for a long time.

-They are distracted and therefore leave their things forgotten.

- They are not paying attention to the details.

- They do not know how to follow orders, they do not listen and therefore they do not follow orders.

- Do not finish the tasks.

- It is difficult for them to maintain order and organization in their tasks and activities.

- They do not maintain a topic of conversation.

- Do not participate in activities or tasks that require a high level of attention.

- It is difficult for them to follow rules or details in games.

Attention deficit appears when school age begins, because a more complex cognitive activity is required and is persistently significant during adolescence and adulthood.

Impulsiveness.

Impulsivity is the least frequent symptom of the three core symptoms of ADHD.

Impulsivity is characterized due to:

- They do not like to wait for their turn.

- They have very little patience.

-They act and say what they want without thinking about the consequences and that makes them impulsive.

- They are conflicting since they cannot be contradicted.

- They are always interrupting others.

Impulsivity is the difficulty that these people present to think things before acting. This is a big problem, because the patient becomes in some cases aggressive, dangerous and can live in conflict situations in adulthood.
