Film colorization has existed for about a decade, but the process is slow and expensive. The only times a movie gets converted into color using the film-industry method is when they think there will be a large enough market to justify the huge investment of converting it.

As with many other things, advances in artificial intelligence stand to change this completely. A recent AI using generative adversarial networks has learned to convert monochromatic images into vibrant color all on it's own, and the results are very impressive.

There is still some bottleneck of processing, since a picture is simply 1 frame of the movie, and the framerate of an hour long film can quickly stack the number of images in need of conversion into the hundreds of thousands, but we all know that computation speed is constantly accelerating, so it won't be long until this kind of technology is implemented into services such as YouTube or Netflix, at which point you could simply click a checkbox option to view anything in color!
