My sister gave us a call in late 2013 and asked whether we would like to walk the Portuguese Camino? She and her husband were walking and it was going to be a fun small personal tour. How enticing, but I was somewhat hesitant. You see, I had heard about the stories of of the steep hills and mountains. I only liked walking on flat surfaces. Little did I know that I would actually love walking up. As it goes and you might relate to this, not everything goes according to plan and it takes flexibility and a willingness to deal with what crops up. When we arrived in Porto to meet up with our fellow walkers carrying backpacks, (only the basics) and dressed as pilgrims, we were faced with the first challenge. As 'Murphy's Law" goes, the flight organiser who booked the first night's accommodation got it very wrong. He got the month wrong. We were told by the helpful clerk that not a room was left in this "Inn". No worries he added, there is a room at the Great Western a couple of kilometres up the road: *You can easily walk!* **
It was my first uphill trek along an unknown road in Port and my first introduction to long inclines.
** This was the start of a most memorable long distance walk in the countries of Portugal and Spain. I found that walking uphill was easier than I thought, I could do it. Surprise surprise! I was bitten by the long distance walking bug. The carefree feeling of walking in the country along very old paths tread by so many over hundred and hundreds of years was amazing. The energy permeating from the well trodden "Way" could be felt by all of us and we all as a group loved being pilgrims walking to St James Cathedral in Santiago. What I experienced in 200 kilometres on the Camino is far too much for one post. Suffice to say, I was most thankful that my husband and I said yes to the invitation extended to us over four ago. *** Cheers Angie **
Thanks for reading and for your support.
