Hackers Demands Over 6 BTC in Ransomware Attack on Government Computers in Atlanta
March 24, 2018

Government computer systems in the US city of Atlanta, Georgia, have been shut down in a ransomware attack in which the hackers are demanding a $51,000 ransom in Bitcoin to reactivate the affected systems, Fortune reported Friday, March 23.

The mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms, announced the attack in a press conference on Thursday, March 22. She told reporters that officials “do not know the extent of the attack” or if it could get personal data or individual bank accounts compromised. “We are all subject to this attack.”

The City of Atlanta first discovered the attack in the early morning hours of Thursday as it noted the outages were affecting computer systems some customers use for paying bills and access information related to the court:

City officials are currently investigating the extent of the breach with the aid of Microsoft and security agencies. However, the situation has not been resolved as at press time.

While seeking means to resolve the situation, the authorities have encouraged residents to keep track of their personal information and accounts if they believed it could be compromised in the hack.

Bitcoin currently trades at approximately $8500, which means that the demanded ransom would cost the city around 6 BTC.
