The common green grasshopper is a grasshopper of the Acrididae family. It is found in moderately wet regions of Europe and is distributed widely across Britain. Its range extends as far as Siberia and Mongolia. In Ireland it tends to be found in areas with long grass, such as farmland, grassland, heathland and upland. Ireland's biggest leaf-eating insect is a good five inches (12.5 centimetres) long, but its young are hatched from eggs a mere 4mm across. Even full-grown, however, the unarmed stick insect, Acanthoxyla inermis, can be invisible right in front of your eyes.

Just now, as it happens, is a good time to go looking for the beast at its very local haunts in the south-west of Ireland. As the wind strips the last leaves from the shrubs, some bare twigs start walking, searching for what may well be the last meals of their brief lives.

Ireland's stick insects are among nature's most intriguing masters (or rather, mistresses) of camouflage. [source ](https://www.irishtimes.com/news/oh-to-be-a-stick-insect-1.342399#:~:text=As%20the%20wind%20strips%20the,rather%2C%20mistresses)

The fully grown Muslin Moth caterpillar is c 35 mm.

The body ground colour is grey with tufts of gingery/brown hair sprouting from warts.

The head is a dull orangey brown.

The eggs, other caterpillar instars and cocoon featured below were reared from eggs laid by a female found on the south coast of Cornwall. [source ](https://www.wildlifeinsight.com/the-muslin-moth-and-caterpillar-diaphora-mendica/)
