The recent events between Ukraine and Russia have shown the world a side of the cancellation culture we have never seen before, Russia was cancelled, cancelled to the extreme, but is this something to be happy about or something we should be concerned about?

Hello friends I hope you are very well, today I want to talk to you about a topic that has been worrying me for days, I like to call this phenomenon the warlike use of the cancellation culture. 

But what is the cancellation culture?

Basically it is the new phenomenon in which a group of people remove any kind of support, whether moral, financial or social, from a person or group of people based on some kind of action, words or opinions that they have, and that are considered incorrect by that group of people.

An example of the culture of canceling a person can be the case of 2020 to the writer J.K Rowling, famous for being the writer of the Harry Potter saga. Who after making some comments on Twitter that were seen as Transphobic, something that generated attacks from the LGBTQ community, and people at the end, the pressure was so much that in 2021 HBO decided not to invite her to the annual meeting of the Harry Potter franchise ... incredible if we think that the franchise would not exist if it were not for the genius of her.

For Rowling it may be a hard blow not to be considered by the big production companies for new projects, but with the tremendous success that Harry Potter had I don't think she will have to worry about money in the next years.

The case is worse when it comes to people who are taking their first steps in a career and have not reaped millions with success yet, as in the case of Gina Carano actress, former MMA fighter, who participated in productions such as Fast and Furious 6, Deadpool, and most recently in the second season of the hit series The Mandalorian. Gina Carano committed the sin of mocking those who demanded that she support transgender or BLM agendas, at no time did she speak out against those movements, she only demanded that she not be forced to support them as she simply had a different opinion, he was also against the restrictions forced by governments in the middle of the pandemic and supported theories about an electoral fraud in the US, but the straw that broke the camel's back9 shared a post where he talks about how governments use the divisions in the views of the people to foment hatred and repression of the people to the people, for the benefit of the elites. Those people who demanded her to support their agenda now demanded her dismissal, and as Gina's opinions were not in line with Disney executives, she was ordered to be fired from Lucasfilm, and then released a statement saying that Disney will not take her into account in future projects, and well, we all know that Disney owns a large part of the audiovisual industry, the monstrous monopoly incorporates franchises such as Marvel, the Star Wars Universe, the Alien/blade runner universe, and even ESPN. But not only that, even Disney used its influence to get the agency representing Gina Carano to terminate the contract.

The 'Cancellation' can ruin a person's career in hours, however this phenomenon is complex and has positive facets as well as some very dark ones.

Following the example of the Gina Carano case, we can say that in part it is good that people's opinion counts, but the fact is that there is a large number of people who also do not care about these issues, and therefore do not have an opinion, but who would not agree with someone losing their job for having a different opinion. Which brings us to a situation where perhaps it is not the majority that speaks out but the loudest.

Another point is the fact that companies use the culture of cancellation to repress those who do not join the company's guidelines by making it seem like a fair thing to do. Both things in combination create an environment where people are afraid to express their opinions, basically, a tyranny and that, as much as it benefits some today, in the long run is bad for everyone. Many of those Germans who denounced their Jewish neighbors, ended up being executed by the same Gestapo they helped bring to power.

But recently, since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, we could see a new facet of the cancellation culture, which has taken it to extremes difficult to understand, basically, Russia has been cancelled, that is obvious. Public opinion is very much against the invasion, and I am too, but in addition to the economic sanctions imposed by the governments of the world, dozens of large companies have stopped doing business in the country.

And there is a persecution of anything that looks Russian on the internet, in the social networks the anti-Russian narrative predominates, without taking into account the excesses of the other actors in the conflict. Certainly the invasion of Ukraine is a crime, but enacting laws that allow confiscating the property of any citizen with ties to Russia, that is tyranny too, but the US government uses the war to pass laws like that in the midst of the confusion you can read the letter of the new law here https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/6869

Such a law can be used for more nefarious purposes, and in peacetime it would surely have met with more opposition, but it doesn't end there, countries like the Czech Republic have passed prison sentences for those who speak well of the invasion of Russia, and in Slovakia as well.

On the internet it is almost impossible to find information about the extra judicial executions being carried out by the Ukrainian government in the middle of the war, to get rid of opponents.

I condemn the invasion, but I also condemn the fact that men between 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country, and forcing them to fight in the conflict, giving a civilian a rifle does not make him a soldier, it makes him just a meat shield.

But nowadays such opinions are difficult to share on social networks, and I even risk sharing them here. Still, my problem is the fact that because the narrative is to repudiate the invasion nefarious acts are accepted and justified, while companies put thousands of Russians out of work who may not support the invasion either, over 200 million people are now cut off from the world because of their president, and because no one wants to defend them for fear of being cancelled.

Maybe this is the best way to curb Russia's imperialistic ambitions, maybe an economic war and cancellation is the way that involves the least suffering, that is true, but bringing an entire nation, with its entire population to ruin, should never be something that is taken lightly.

It terrifies me to think what governments and corporations can do in the future with the power we are giving them, to use the cancellation culture as a weapon to promote their agendas, with no one able to complain, and everyone afraid to have a say.

Tomorrow or the next day it could be us in this community who are cancelled, because here you can freely express your opinion, and those friends is something that should concern us all. That is why it is important to defend our independence from large corporations and central governments.

And in all scenarios, defend our right to have different opinions, that is what makes us human, that we all see the world differently, that is the root of creativity, inventiveness and progress, a world where everyone has the same opinion would be a world condemned to ostracism.
