**Willow**. This tree begins to "bloom" when snow is still lying all around in the fields, meadows, and the forest. This is the very first plant in our region that begins to bloom and delight the eye. A week before Easter, Orthodox Christians in Russia celebrate Palm Sunday. This is such a feature of the meeting of Christ in Jerusalem among the Russians. Well, palm trees don't grow here, that's why they came up with the idea to consecrate willow twigs in the church and put them in houses next to the icon until next year. If the birch had bloomed first, then birch twigs would have become so popular with Orthodox people.

Ива, верба. Это дерево начинает "цвести", когда кругом на полях, лугах и в лесу еще лежит снег. Это самое первое растение в наших краях, которое начинает цвести и радовать глаз. За неделю до Пасхи православные христиане в России празднуют вербное воскресенье. Это такая особенность встречи Христа в Иерусалиме у русских. Ну не растут у нас пальмы, вот поэтому придумали освящать веточки вербы в церкви и ставить их в домах рядом с иконой до следующего года. Если бы первой цвела береза, то тогда бы веточки березы стали такими популярными у православного люда.

Willow loves low-lying wet places very much so that there is some water, a river, and a stream nearby. I took these photos in a high sandy place.  And this happens sometimes.

Yellow fluffy willow catkins scatter light through their shaggy stamens-pistils. This is probably what the willow attracts our gaze.

Желтые пушистые ивовые сережки рассеивают свет сквозь свои мохнатые тычинки-пестики. Именно этим, наверное, верба и привлекает наш взор.

And this is a branch of black currant. These bushes also begin to prepare for flowering early. On small hills, on well-warmed soils, the buds on the branches are already swollen.

А это ветка черной смородины. Эти кусты тоже рано начинают готовиться к цветению. На небольших пригорках, на хорошо прогретых почвах почки на ветках уже набухли.
