La traqueotomía es un procedimiento quirúrgico que consiste en crear una abertura a través del cuello, la cual va a atravesar la tráquea, colocando así una sonda a través de la abertura para suministrar así oxígeno o permitir retirar contenido como las secreciones de los campos pulmonares.

>Tracheotomy is a surgical procedure that consists of creating an opening through the neck, which will go through the trachea, thus placing a tube through the opening to supply oxygen or allow content such as secretions to be removed from the lung fields.

El orificio se ubica en la parte delantera del cuello y de la tráquea, se realiza de forma quirúrgica colocando así un tubo de traqueotomía en el orificio con el fin de mantenerlo abierto para permitir el paso de la respiración. El procedimiento quirúrgico mediante el cual se logra realizar esta abertura se denomina como traqueostomía.

Gracias a la traqueotomía se permite crear una ruta de aire la cual permite al paciente respirar, se realiza en casos donde el paciente mantiene una respiración reducida o obstruida por diferentes causas a nivel del sistema respiratorio alto. 

En otros casos es indispensable realizar una traqueostomía cuando el paciente requiere estar conectado a ventilación mecánica por un largo período de tiempo para así ayudarle a respirar.

Existen casos de urgencias donde el paciente se encuentra con las vías aéreas superiores obstruidas, es aquí donde a causa de una lesión traumática ocasionada en cara o cuello son las responsables del problema.

>Thanks to the tracheotomy, it is possible to create an air route which allows the patient to breathe, it is done in cases where the patient maintains reduced or obstructed breathing for different reasons at the level of the upper respiratory system.

>In other cases, it is essential to perform a tracheostomy when the patient needs to be connected to mechanical ventilation for a long period of time in order to help him breathe.

>There are emergency cases where the patient finds the upper airways obstructed, it is here that due to a traumatic injury caused to the face or neck they are responsible for the problem.

En el procedimiento se debe de utilizar anestesia local, al menos que la situación sea crítica y se requiere de anestesia general. El procedimiento es realizado por un médico general en conjunto con el personal de enfermería.

El cirujano se encarga de crear una abertura dentro de la tráquea, entre los anillos cartilaginosos que conforman a la pared externa de la tráquea, luego deberá introducir la cánula de traqueotomía. 

>Local anesthesia should be used in the procedure, unless the situation is critical and general anesthesia is required. The procedure is performed by a general practitioner in conjunction with the nursing staff.


>The surgeon is responsible for creating an opening within the trachea, between the cartilaginous rings that make up the outer wall of the trachea, then he must insert the tracheostomy cannula.

Dicho procedimiento se emplea en casos de tener un cuerpo extraño el cual obstruye las vías respiratorias, incapacidad para respirar por si solo, anomalía hereditaria o congénita que afecte a la laringe o tráquea, parálisis cerebral, cáncer de cuello, lesiones ocasionadas en cuello o boca.

>This procedure is used in cases of having a foreign body which obstructs the airways, inability to breathe on its own, hereditary or congenital anomaly that affects the larynx or trachea, cerebral palsy, neck cancer, neck or mouth injuries.
