Hi! My name is Ash and I'm from Miami, Florida. Surprisingly, I've found myself living in Guatemala for the last ten months. Before that, I was in Mexico for nine and before that I backpacked through ten countries in Europe. 

After two and a half years of traveling, I find myself asking the question, “how did I get here?”, quite a lot. So, how did I get here? What have I been doing all this time? That’s what I want to explore on here. 

Before we dive into the meat of my last few years, I think we need some background. My name is Ash and I'm a twenty four year old from Miami, Florida. I grew up with immigrant parents, my mom's from Nicaragua and my dad's from Cuba, I have three brothers and a sister (I'm the baby baby baby of the family), and I love love love to travel. 

The life I find myself living now was never part of my plan. I graduated high school at eighteen and moved eight hours away from my home to go to University. This was my first (but not my last) experience leaving behind everything I knew: my comfort zone, my friends, my family and my home, to start anew. Was it scary? Super. But it was also...liberating. It was empowering to see myself grow, push myself, hold myself accountable, and succeed all on my own. I got my first job when I was fifteen years old. I helped my mom with what I could, saved money aside for myself, and realized my love for hospitality. Moving away for the first time proved to myself that I could live my life as independently as I always wanted to. 

I spent three years in Florida State University, double majoring in Political Science and Literature. My plan for as long as I could remember was to get my Bachelor's degree and go to law school. I wanted to study criminal law and make my life as public defender, eventually moving into the private sector and helping as many people as I could. That all changed in my last year of University. 

As fate would have it, my soon-to-be best friend (Kins) was also majoring in Literature, and in our second to last semester of school we found ourselves taking three classes together. Little did we know that our chance meeting would change the course of our lives for the foreseeable future.

Here's Kins ad I when we first met three years ago! 

Throughout our first year of friendship...Kins and I did a LOT. She helped me move out of my apartment, I got her a job at the smoke shop I was managing, her car broke down so we shared mine, we spent a year taking salsa classes together, I helped her learn Spanish, she helped me learn Tarot, and together we made little life out of our chance meeting. A few months after meeting, Kins told me about Workaway. When she first brought it up, I thought she was kind of insane. Here's this girl I JUST met asking if I want to quit my plans and move across the ocean with her to work with random people in random countries. It took her about a day to convince me that this wasn't as crazy as it sounded. 

Once I decided to hear out, I fell in love with her plan of graduating, applying to whatever volunteer positions we could find, and fucking off to the other side of the world as long as we could afford it. Our plan was six months in Europe and go back to Florida and study. Kins also wanted to move onto grad school after getting her Bachelor's. We wanted to experience the world at least once before committing to four more years of intense studying. When we got to Europe, we quickly realized (and I mean two weeks in kinda quickly) that six months wouldn't be nearly enough.

Some pictures from our first two weeks in Europe! More of my journey to come...

Fast-forwarding to today, I find myself sitting at my job in Guatemala, joining HIVE (something I didn't know existed until a month ago) and writing about my life. After some of the HIVE crew tried their best to explain this project to me, @ninaeatshere was finally able to show me why I would want to join: so I can write again. As a Literature major, writing was my life for years and travelling has made me put that aside for too long now. So, enjoy my journey through parts of the world as I enjoy my journey through writing again.

Hola, me llamo Ash y soy de Miami, Florida. Sorprendentemente, me he encontrado viviendo en Guatemala durante los últimos diez meses. Antes de eso, estuve en México durante nueve y antes de eso viajé de mochilera por diez países de Europa.

Después de dos años y medio viajando, me pregunto a menudo "¿cómo he llegado hasta aquí? ¿Cómo he llegado hasta aquí? ¿Qué he estado haciendo todo este tiempo? Eso es lo que quiero explorar aquí.

Antes de sumergirnos en la carne de mis últimos años, creo que necesitamos algunos antecedentes. Me llamo Ash y tengo veinticuatro años y soy de Miami, Florida. Crecí con padres inmigrantes, mi madre es de Nicaragua y mi padre de Cuba, tengo tres hermanos y una hermana (soy el bebé de la familia), y me encanta viajar.

La vida que llevo ahora nunca formó parte de mis planes. Me gradué en el instituto a los dieciocho años y me mudé a ocho horas de casa para ir a la Universidad. Fue mi primera experiencia (pero no la última) dejando atrás todo lo que conocía: mi zona de confort, mis amigos, mi familia y mi hogar, para empezar de nuevo. ¿Daba miedo? Mucho. Pero también fue... liberador. Fue estimulante verme crecer, esforzarme, responsabilizarme y triunfar por mí misma. Conseguí mi primer trabajo a los quince años. Ayudaba a mi madre con lo que podía, ahorraba dinero para mí y me di cuenta de que me encantaba la hostelería. Mudarme por primera vez me demostró que podía vivir mi vida con la independencia que siempre había deseado.

Pasé tres años en la Universidad Estatal de Florida, con una doble licenciatura en Ciencias Políticas y Literatura. Mi plan desde que tengo uso de razón era licenciarme e ir a la facultad de Derecho. Quería estudiar derecho penal y hacer mi vida como defensor público, para eventualmente pasar al sector privado y ayudar a tanta gente como pudiera. Todo eso cambió en mi último año de universidad.

El destino quiso que el que iba a ser mi mejor amigo (Kins) también se licenciara en Literatura, y en el penúltimo semestre de la universidad nos encontramos cursando tres asignaturas juntos. No sabíamos que nuestro encuentro cambiaría el curso de nuestras vidas en el futuro inmediato.

A lo largo de nuestro primer año de amistad... Kins y yo hicimos MUCHO. Me ayudó a mudarme de mi apartamento, le conseguí un trabajo en el fumadero que yo regentaba, su coche se estropeó y compartimos el mío, pasamos un año tomando clases de salsa juntas, la ayudé a aprender español, ella me ayudó a aprender Tarot, y juntas hicimos una pequeña vida de nuestro encuentro casual. Unos meses después de conocernos, Kins me habló de Workaway. Cuando lo mencionó por primera vez, pensé que estaba loca. Una chica que acababa de conocer me preguntaba si quería dejar mis planes y cruzar el océano con ella para trabajar con gente cualquiera en países cualquiera. Tardó un día en convencerme de que no era tan descabellado como parecía.

Una vez que decidí escucharla, me enamoré de su plan de graduarnos, solicitar cualquier puesto de voluntariado que encontráramos y largarnos al otro lado del mundo mientras pudiéramos permitírnoslo. Nuestro plan era seis meses en Europa y volver a Florida a estudiar. Kins también quería hacer un posgrado después de licenciarse. Queríamos experimentar el mundo al menos una vez antes de comprometernos a cuatro años más de intensos estudios. Cuando llegamos a Europa, nos dimos cuenta rápidamente (y me refiero a las dos semanas) de que seis meses no serían suficientes.

Avanzando rápido hasta hoy, me encuentro sentada en mi trabajo en Guatemala, uniéndome a HIVE (algo que no sabía que existía hasta hace un mes) y escribiendo sobre mi vida. Después de que algunos miembros del equipo de HIVE hicieran todo lo posible por explicarme este proyecto, @ninaeatshere fue finalmente capaz de mostrarme por qué querría unirme: para poder escribir de nuevo. Como licenciada en Literatura, escribir fue mi vida durante años y viajar me ha hecho dejarlo de lado durante demasiado tiempo. Así que disfrutad de mi viaje por partes del mundo mientras yo disfruto de mi viaje a través de la escritura de nuevo.
