According to Prof. Dr. Yulia, as the lead researcher conducting the Research and Community Service Information Base (BIMA) research from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education, coordination with the Aceh Regional Office of the Ministry of Law is necessary to obtain guidance and support in the registration process for the former Sikai Beutong Ateuh Rice Geographical Indication. She explained that geographical indications aim to protect products with distinctive characteristics due to their geographical origin, such as Sikai Beutong Ateuh Nagan Rice. Geographical indications indicate that an item originates from a specific region and possesses characteristics, quality, or reputation influenced by natural or human factors in that particular area. Yulia continued, explaining that the registration of the BSBAN geographical indication serves as a form of legal protection for product authenticity, maintains the reputation and quality of BSBAN, and increases the competitiveness and economic value of Beutong rice. "This effort is also related to traditional knowledge and environmentally friendly practices passed down through generations," explained Prof. Yulia on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The research team from Malikussaleh University, chaired by Prof. Dr. Yulia, includes Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin; Dr. Herinawati; and Dr. Yusrizal. They are coordinating with the Aceh Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to obtain support and guidance in the GI registration process, thereby increasing the chances of successful registration and protection of the intellectual property rights of Sikai Beutong Ateuh Nagan Rice. Dr. Meurah Budiman, Head of the Aceh Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, welcomed the efforts being pioneered by researchers from Malikussaleh University. "We are committed to increasing public awareness and understanding of the importance of protecting and utilizing intellectual property, particularly geographical indications," she said. As a research member and native of Beutong Ateuh, Prof. Jamaluddin hopes that the registration of the Sikai Beutong Ateuh Nagan rice geographical indication will run smoothly and successfully, thereby improving the welfare of the farming community and the regional economy. "This effort can be viewed from legal, cultural, and economic perspectives, so it requires support from all parties, including the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the local government," said Prof. Jamaluddin.[] ***
