The issue of lost identity is a very serious one in a world where crisis and war have become the order of the day. This has led to a situation where some individuals are tagged or labelled as invincible, not because they are not visible but because they do not have birth certificates or may have lost them during the crisis that took them away from home. The founder of the Tykn project was a victim of this same circumstance as well. He was born in Kuwait and he never really knew the implications of losing his birth certificate during the gulf war in the ‘90s until he started working in the Netherlands and at some point, he needed to get a drivers’ license and he was told to render his birth certificate in order to validate his identity. He couldn’t provide any and he had to be tagged with an unknown origin.

People have lost not only birth certificates, but some have also lost the proofs of their educational background which makes it hard for them to practice their discipline. Tey, while speaking during an interview talked about one of the major factors that led to the Tykn vision. He had a roommate in the Netherlands refugee camp who was a surgeon and according to Tey, this guy could carry out a heart surgery blindfolded, but could not practice because he lost all of his documents to war and violence in his home country. He had to remain unemployed or underemployed because of this. Since no documents backed by law actually says that he is a surgeon.

Not being able to get gainful employment is an aspect of lacking a valid means of identification. Another aspect is the risks involved in having a lost identity. Those who have lost their identity can easily become victims of so many disastrous occurrences like; human trafficking, sex trafficking, kidnapping or even organ trading. This is because, when this set of people become missing; there are no means to track their records to know if they are truly missing. There are no records of where these people are from or where they have been since they have no passport and other valid means of identification. Even their names are mere aliases without birth certificates to verify that they actually bear those names. Their occupation is just a mere promise and an informal practice since there are no certificates anywhere that say what they are certified at what they claim to be.

Refugees are also not allowed to have bank accounts which means; they practically have no direct access to funds. The notion behind this is that an invincible person could be an instrument for money laundering since no record of such a person can be found anywhere in the legal books. This is total invincibility and a great problem to all those who are victims of it.

The government also has a lot of challenges in terms of how to identify their citizens since birth registration centers were destroyed during these crises. Tendering a certificate will be unverifiable since the copies that were held by that state have been compromised. Hence, we are faced with a situation where people can’t identify themselves with any government in a verifiable way.

During any legal battle, one of the basic steps is to verify if the parties involved really exist.
