With a shattered soul, Adele screamed in agony, not caring a bit how her once made-up face turned smudged and the catarrh that came running down her nose to her lips. She cried out profusely that the four walls which confined her echoed back the sound heard in plain agony.

She held onto her ears as millions of thoughts clouded her mind, her heart erratic and her eyes up facing the ceiling with her kneeling, she held onto her heart and questioned the air, “Why? why…why…why..” She kept on screaming, hitting her folded palm-turned fist on the cold floor continually unable to stop herself from the pain that ignite through it.

Her breath hitched as she struggled for breath just to remember, to remember all the beautiful things they've done together, the words said to each other, the incredible moments spent enjoying each other's company but then, she couldn’t remember those happy memories, it was like they didn’t exist as all she could remember was the painful experience encountered some hours back.

Laughing out maniacally she gestured with her hands in the air as if she had a guest in her room, it all happened fast and in a blur that she choked on her spit, coughing out, she held her broken heart as she recalled the incident that occurred hours back.

It was their fifth anniversary and she was happy and left work early, Adele worked at The Creative and Technological company where she was the secretary to the C.E.O Mr. Jenkins.

Tommy her fiance had proposed to her in a very simple yet romantic way in his home a week before their anniversary and she had said yes before he traveled out for a contract awarded to him, Tommy is an engineer who works on contract and she had helped him get contracts like she always does all the time as she had contact of well-known personnel due to her job status in The Creative and Technological company, and Tommy in return had always pampered and loved her dearly, or so she thought.

Leaving work early she waved her colleague goodnight as she held tightly onto the coat she wore to keep her from the cold that seeped into her skin, winter did come early and it is beautiful.

 Hailing a taxi, she boarded in as lots of thoughts swirled through her mind of the plan she had made for their anniversary, picking up her phone from her bag, she called the restaurant she had made a reservation in to confirm if everything was in order as her sigh in approval after the call.

Tommy was to arrive today and she had decided to wait for him in his home to surprise him but not after showering and looking all good and kinky for her man, smiling deeply she alighted from the taxi when it got to her destination as she dashed into her home and washed up before taking time to apply makeup to enhance her beauty using Tommy's favorite shade of lipstick indigo and wearing a V-shaped knee purple gown coupled with a black shoe and purse, using her spray she smiled beautifully at herself in the mirror before dialing the restaurant's number again just to be sure things are in order.

Wrapping herself up with her black coat she walked out of her apartment to surprise her lover, hailing a taxi again, she boarded it to begin the short journey.

On arrival at Tommy's house, she alighted from the taxi and walked to her fiance's door with her spare key to his home in hand, opening up the door, what caught her eyes made her stagger, right on the lovers sitting room couch she got him last year was Tommy and a lady being all lovey-dovey.

She cleaned her eyes a million times just to be sure she wasn’t dreaming, her purse fell with a thud and her mouth open and that did justice in making her presence known. Tommy kissed the lady on his lap and whispered something to her ear as she kissed him dearly before sending daggers her way and then walking off into his room.

Clearing his throat, Tommy spoke. “I know what you think and it isn’t like that, I used to love you but fell out of it 3 years back, I didn’t want to break up with you and decided to propose to you last week because I pitied you and…”

“You pitied me? “cut In Adele, holding on to the tears that wants to be let out she continued, ”You pitied me after years of giving my all to you, you promised me you would never hurt me and I believed you, you fell out of love for that long and still held onto me, why?”

“Well, you still had some benefits you give out like the contract work I get, I didn’t want to lose that and I thought if I stayed maybe the love could come back but it never did, you can take the engagement ring with you as it didn’t cost much or you can drop it if you want to as I am getting married next month. "

“Also drop the spare key has it doesn’t belong to you anymore and close the door on your way out, “ he added.

Pinching herself, Adele walked to him to check his temperature, “Are you okay Tommy?” she asked with so much concern.

Pushing her away he spoke sternly, ”Do not let yourself be embarrassed further Adel, gently work out now or I will push you out myself, my lady awaits me in the next room.

The word “my lady” echoed around as she felt rage fill her eyes as all she saw was fire, her heart ached and she felt her body shaky, raising her hands, she slapped him hard on his cheek.

“How dare you!” She cried out, “I gave you everything, loved you unconditionally and this is what I get back, 5 years Tommy, 5 good years out of my life and you tell me this, all this time I thought you cared for me, all those words said to me were all falsehood?”

“I won’t allow that next time," he spat out menacingly, "I used you, so what? It's no big deal, you can start afresh again, 33 years isn’t a bad time to find love. Leave now! Before I push you out.” 

Standing firmly she stood, unmoving, her eyes teary as she pleads, she moved her hands as if to touch him but it wasn’t achievable.

Dragging her out of his house, she screamed as he pushed her out and closed the door behind him, the door opened again and he threw her purse.

The stares she got from passersby made her wish the ground could open and swallow her whole, standing up, she walked off and hailed a taxi home.

On getting home, she collapsed on the cold floor, shattered and broken beyond repair...... The pain was unbearable and then she came to a conclusion, life isn’t worth living anymore, picking a pen and paper she wrote a letter to her parents, thanking them for all that they’d done and how sorry she is for making this decision.

Going to her cabinet she brought out a brandy and drank the whole bottle clean, she was lightheaded afterward.

Walking to her bathroom, she switched on the tap to her Jacuzzi and watched as it filled to the brim, sighing deeply, she entered the water still clothed, resting her head at the edge of the Jacuzzi, slipping off, she fell underneath the water, she got choked and in need for breath but she never struggled to be out, her mind has been made up and there is no going back. 

Closing her eyes to the world, she felt a strange light directly on her closed eyelids, the pain it bought with it hurts and she struggled underneath the water taking in lots of water has her hands held on the two edges of her bathtub, coming up, she threw up the content in her stomach to a strange light glittering around her, is she in heaven? She questioned.

Standing up from the water with a wobble leg, she moved to her bathroom's window to check the source of the light and what she saw calmed her, high up was the moon dancing and giving out a homey feeling and the light didn’t hurt anymore, instead it warms her body in a good way and touched her aching heart, she could have sworn she saw the moon break and fix itself again or was it still the alcohol and she heard it sing a song, a song that sent hope into her soul and sparkled it.

The way the moon moved surged new energy to live in her and she smiled so brightly she couldn’t stop herself, turning around, she cleaned off her mess and showered before walking into her room where she had dried herself up and chosen a pink robe to cover up.

Picking up the letter she wrote to her parents, she tore off the paper and trashed it, turning around, she walked towards her bed with new hope surging through her vein, suicide isn’t the way out and she will survive this moment, and others too, climbing her bed, her tired body hit the mattress as she snored out loud in seconds, filling her room with her snoring sound.
