The first edition of Mizu No Oto - Every Image has its Haiku contest has come to an end. What a fantastic participation!
@f3nix and I, @marcoriccardi, discussing the project before its launch, were not sure how many people would be interested in writing haiku, but since the first day we seen that the entries flocked like *sakura* petals. A total of sixteen poets have ventured in the art of haiku, but the number of poems is higher, due to the extremely prolific @raj808, who has written four, plus one under the presentation post; and @dirge, who didn’t participate to this edition, but let us know it with… a haiku in the comments!
*Those are the heroes Bananafish deserves, but not those it needs right now…* (no, this was another thing... nevermind!)

(Here, usually, there’s the part in which @f3nix brags about what’s boiling in the bananafish kitchen, but I will let this to the last [Finish the Story winners]( https://steemit.com/finishthestory/@bananafish/finish-the-story-contest-week-27-winners) post…)

**Before the winners are announced**, I want to spend a few words about haiku poetics. I was introduced to this style back in 2005 by a close friend of mine, @wido, who is a poet with many prizes and publications behind him, as well as a Japan enthusiast and Japanese speaker. Later, I was a member of the Italian Haiku Association (AIH) until its dissolution, in 2016. I’m not a master, but an ever learning disciple.
Based on what I've read and experienced about haiku in these 13 years, I think @f3nix caught, in a surprisingly short time frame, very much of the haiku feel. I recommend you to read his many “Haiku, Image” posts.
The haiku with which he participated to the contest should be, in my opinion, the winner, but he told me he wanted give up the prize, because he is the creator of @bananafish and he was favored since he took the shot.
Nonetheless, I put his haiku here for you to read:

>
In the fall lagoon -
even that lonely red pole
will lie with others

________________________________________
>
Laguna al vento -
anche quel palo rosso
marcirà in acqua

Notice how the first verse contains the kigo (fall) and constitutes a first image, which detaches itself from the image evoked by the other two verses. The dash emphasizes this kireji (cut). The next image expresses all the melancholy for the inexorable decay of things (sabi), but in a hinted and delicate way (shiori). The poet's ego remains outside, there is no judgment or morality, only empathy (mono no aware) and a slight wonder (yugen). The object described, an old pole, and the words chosen to do it are simple, daily and without frills (karumi and wabi).
In my humble opinion, this is a great haiku.

#
But now…drumroll…it’s time to cheer the winners!
#
## Best Haiku award:
**@opera.shoujo** is the first of a, hopely long, series of haiku contest winners! 2 SBI shares ready for her! [Her haiku]( https://steemit.com/haikucontest/@opera.shoujo/mizu-no-oto-haiku-contest-week-01) almost reached perfection, showing all the principles and feels, although slightly too explicit in evoking the feeling of the author. Not bad for her “first haiku ever”, as she wrote!
>An old gray blanket
Deep enough to drown the pain
When summer sun dies
## Popular Choice award:
**@opera.shoujo** rocks the stadium of the first edition, winning the popular choice too!
However, I’ve something to complain about it. Only *three* votes were cast, two of them for opera.shoujo, compared to 16 participants. It’s a pity that many of you have overlooked this opportunity to express a preference. Contest like this and Finish the Story strongly rely on the community, and the popular vote is a way to reward not only the writing that meets better the formal requirements, but also the one that touched the hearts of more people, regardless for the form. I really hope next time there will be more votes, really!

For now, opera.shoujo gains 1 more SBI shares, for a total of 3!

She also achieves the right to decorate her footer with this exclusive and beautiful banner by @f3nix:

Honorable mentions go to @brisby, @rebeccabe, @cyberspacegod, and @raj808. Their haiku were all good and moving, I would like you to read them and show them some love, if you have not yet done so.

Through this, the strength of many, shall become the strength of one. So in time, the strength of one, can in turn, become that of many. As the delegations grow, so does the value of the vote, so as the power grows, so it returns. Indeed, the mighty god will appreciate those who support it, and in doing so, support this entire contest. For many of us, it is already it's own reward. In a steemit full of vanishing contests, your support allows this one to keep going, and allows everyone to polish their writing skills with a challenging weekly work out (not to mention @curies's precious support and votes on the participants!). By coming together and sharing the work, we can empower the potassium rich deity to create an oceanic fruit-salad that never runs out!

**So join the core, support the mission! [Pledge your allegiance with your delegation](https://steemit.com/info/@bananafish/bananafish-voting-trail-sp-delegations-discord-channel), show your continued support through by joining the curation trail, and all will share in the glorious bounty of the @bananafish!**

**A special thank to @theironfelix, @raj808, @brisby, @maverickinvictus, @cyemela, @marcoriccardi, @calluna, @oivas, @anixio, @ntowl for their precious delegations, making this project a reality!**
