Recently I lost my grandmother at the age of 85 years of age. Living to 85 is an achievement in itself when you're born in the 30's and can recall memories of war as well as living through lead containments in everything and asbestos. During the funeral service as a Bible passage was being read out and a few religious words were being spoken, I got to wondering: where do we go when we die? Depending on whether you are religious or not, or what religion you believe in, you'll have different ideas about what happens to us when we die. I am not a religious person whatsoever, I hate the title atheist. Because it feels like an intentional dig at those who consider themselves Christian or whatever. If I were to label my belief it would just be: impartial. But the concept of "going to heaven" and getting to live forever, watching over your loved ones who are still alive is a strange concept when you think about it. Who honestly wants to live forever? How do you handle family arguments/issues where you might not want to see a loved one again? Do you know you're dead? Do you get a choice to go to heaven and live forever, or sleep? The concept of heaven or a place you go when you die is comforting to some, but if you're aware of what is happening, it would be quite scary knowing that you've left and gone some strange place you can never leave once you get there. I think the simplest explanation is when we die, we just go to sleep. We stop existing. And honestly, I find comfort in that. It's normal human behaviour to be afraid of death, even those who say they aren't, deep down are afraid of death. If you were to die and go to heaven, knowing that you've just died and being able to see your family sobbing and wallowing in sadness without being able to do anything wouldn't make you happy, you would feel helpless. You spend your whole life working and tiring yourself out, by the end don't you just want to sleep?
