The experts designed a flexible material such as flexible tin foil, but solid enough to stop the bullets.

Diamine is designed using two layers of graphene, the world's first two-dimensional material with a single atom, which is a million times thinner than human hair. This material can be used in anything, from water-resistant protective coatings, to light-proof armor.

A study led by the Center for Advanced Science Research, of the University of New York City (CUNY), revealed how to place one piece of graphene above another at room temperature, capable of producing a diamond-like substance.

Diamin is a soft, flexible material that is placed under pressure, and then becomes very rigid. This means they are able to stop a bullet and prevent it from passing.

The prototype of the material properties was created in computer simulation, which was part of the study. The experts then used a nuclear force microscope to apply pressure on two layers of graphene for practical testing.

"This is the thinnest material ever created," said lead researcher Elisa Rido.

Graphine, which comes from graphite, was considered the miracle material after it was discovered in 2004 by researchers at the University of Manchester, Andrei Jim and Kostya Novosilov, where they won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Since then, this substance has been proposed for use in renewable energy and night vision goggles. Graphene consists of one atomic layer of carbon atoms forming a hexagonal grid. It is not only a revolution in semiconductors and sensors, but it can lead to breaches in basic quantum physics research.

Scientists believe it can someday be used to create transparent materials, biomedical sensors, and even lightweight and powerful aircraft, in the future.

The results were published in the journal Nanotechnology.
