The definition for courtesy from the oxford dictionary is;

courteous behaviour or disposition.

The definition of courteous is;

polite or considerate in manners.

Why might someone be courteous?  I am courteous because it makes me feel good and because I have observed that interactions based on courtesy, usually have a better outcome.  Courtesy is a form of conduct that can be employed when engaging with another party in the hope that, despite differences, a mutually satisfactory interaction may result for both.  Blockchain technology has the potential to support and enhance the use of courtesy as the internet, along with many of the platforms we use to interact are rebuilt.  Reputation is fast becoming a critical value indicator and one that can only be enhanced by courtesy. 

Aliens.  If humans encounter aliens, it would probably be sensible for those making first contact to be courteous.  Why?  Because the alien might a)have the power to and b)decide to vaporize the planet.  

Courtesy is about maintaining bridges, connections for the future.  Minimizing or mending misunderstandings.  Establishing a bond of trust that enables more efficient, dynamic and fruitful interactions.

If everyone was more courteous, the world would be a better place.
