We march to show support to all our active service men and women. We march because without the actions of the ANZAC heroes all those years ago, we wouldn't live in the country we do today.

On this day in 1915, now 103 years ago, the brave members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) in the early hours of the morning landed on the beaches of the Gallipoli Peninsula. Their objective: to capture the capital of the Ottoman Empire - Constantinople. This was the first landing.

In a literal up hill battle the ANZAC soldiers were met with the showering of machine gun fire and the Ottoman's unrelenting resistance. Yet the valiant ANZAC's persisted, not giving in to fear and doing everything they could for their country and the mates at their side. For eight long months the battle endured, every inch up the hill was met with more gun fire.

At the end of 1915 enough was enough, both sides had major casualties and the ANZAC forces withdrew from their campaign. Their bravery, attitudes and actions in the face of unthinkable hardship solidified forever.

In many ways it was the news of the ANZAC soldiers that helped shape the values and identity of the Australian public for generations to come.

8709 Australian's and 2721 New Zealander's made the ultimate sacrifice on the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula those 103 years ago.

Today, dawn services and street marches will be held in every city in the country to commemorate the ANZAC's as well as all members of the defence force past and present.

Lest We Forget
