There, on a chair, was something that was quite remarkable, the great lord, Sir Francis Bacon, sitting himself down by God's side.

At sight of this remarkable and marvellous sight, he turned up his eyes, and, speaking to me to-day, spoke of the whole universe as the work of the Almighty Creator, and that of His great Maker as the work of the Deity that made it, a work in which, though there had never been anything of this kind, there was a vast multitude of things, and there had never before been so much of them, and all with a common essence, so that it seemed impossible to distinguish between those that belonged to God and He that made them. The universe was His work, so far as they could be judged to belong to Him.
