Something lost is restored
## It was around ten years ago that I first started to notice that my hearing was decreasing,
which was quickly followed by tinnitus (Ringing in the ears). The tinnitus was in my left ear primarily, as was the hearing loss.

**As a medical professional, I quickly discovered that these symptoms specifically could be caused by an acoustic neuroma which is a tumor near the inner ear.**

I discussed this with my primary care physician, and we decided to do an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Fortunately, the MRI was negative for the tumor. I had come to accept my symptoms as simply getting older.

**I had frequently thought about hearing aid devices,** but I just did not find anything that worked well with using my stethoscope.

I also was not thrilled about having the hearing aid and the issues with nightly cleaning and charging or frequent battery changes. Not to mention just having the hearing aid and people seeing that I am getting older. (A bit of vanity on my part).

**Well, things changed about six months ago** when I experienced my very first vertigo event.

This happened while I was at work. I could not walk without holding onto something. I started looking quite pale as one of my patients expressed concern for me. This vertigo was quickly followed by vomiting. My nurse was concerned that I was having a cardiac event. Fortunately, I was working that day with my primary care physician, and he initiated care for me.

**After this event, I had no further episodes until around two months ago,** when they started happening more frequently than I liked. I started on traditional medications, and they helped, but I went to see a friend of mine who is an Otolaryngologist (ENT), and he diagnosed me with Meniere's disease.

**I was put on yet another medication to take daily, and so far, it seems to help.**

I also saw an audiologist who tested and confirmed my left ear was at about 20% hearing.

I spent more time researching new technology that would fit into my life more efficiently, and I discovered the **Phonak Lyric.**

**This is a game changer. I was fitted for the device, and immediately, I heard sounds in my left ear. As a bonus, it has masked my tinnitus as well.**

I am excited about this new device. I just got it, so I will write a follow-up in a month to report how it works.

Until next time,
