Hello, Many interpret Genesis 6:3 as a limit of 120 years of man's age. 3Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless, his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." However, Genesis chapter 11 shows us more people who have lived for more than 120 years. In conclusion, some interpret Genesis 6:3 as follows: as a general rule, people will not live more than 120 years. After the flood, the human life began to shorten considerably (compare Genesis 5 with Genesis 11), and ultimately descended just under 100 years - "24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah. 25 And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters." (Genesis 11:25) Starting then, very few people have lived for over 120 years. Age ImageHowever, another interpretation , which seems more faithful to the context, is that Genesis 6:3 is the statement of God that the flood will come 120 years after the date He announced it. The end of the days of humankind is a reference to the humankind itself, that was to be destroyed by the flood. Some contradict this interpretation because God commanded Noah to build a ship when he was 500 years old in Genesis 5:32 - "Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth." And Noah was 600 years old when the flood came, giving him only 100 years, not 120. "Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth." (Genesis 7:6) However, the time announced by God in Genesis 6:3 is not mentioned. Moreover, Genesis 5:32 does not show the moment when God commanded Noah to build the ship, but rather the age that Noah had when his three sons were born. It is perfectly plausible that God had decided for the flood to come over 120 years, and then waited a few years before commanding Noah to build the ship. Regardless of how things stand, the 100 years between Genesis 5:32 and 7:6 do not, in any way, contradict the 120 years mentioned in Genesis 6:3. A few hundred years after the flood, Moses said: "As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we fly away." (Psalm 90:10) Neither Genesis 6:3, nor Psalm 90:10 are not a statement of God concerning the age of man. Genesis 6:3 is a prediction of the time of the flood. Psalm 90:10 is a mere finding of a given fact, according to which people live 70-80 years (which is true even today). Never lose faith. Godspeed. Nathan Shepard
