I just read a few articles regarding the newly launched Mojaloop, an open-source payment solution, which has been launched by the Bill And Melina Gates Foundation, employing the Interledger Tech developed by Ripple.  Links to the articles that I read to inform me of this recent change:

They have developed it with the following three layers (see video below for more details): 

<ol>
<li>Interoperability Layer</li>
<li>Directory Service Layer</li>
<li>Transaction Settlement Layer</li>
</ol>

The goal is to reduce the complexity of building payment systems that allow unbanked citizens (those who are poorer and/or don't have access to banking services) to be connected with merchants, banks, and governments.   The fact that it is open-source will make it so that more developers will begin working with blockchain who may not have otherwise.   This will embed Bill Gates into the Blockchain Space firmly, which will empower the space and increase demand for blockchain-based solutions.   He's targeting demographics that are under server, which is both philanthropic, as well as a great way to increase the adoption of cryptocurrencies, since there is a demand there that hasn't been met.  I think that Ripple, through its partnership in this endeavor, will be strengthened and so this may be the time to invest, as it is currently around .20 per Ripple Token (XRP).   

Others have worked on this technology than Ripple that will open doors for developers interested in creating decentralized payment systems based on the blockchain.   The Gates Foundation worked with other FinTech companies to make things easier for developers.  An API for mobile systems companies created by Ericsson, Huawei, Telepin, and Mahindra Comviva will make it easier for mobile money providers to integrate existing systems with it.
