When I was a child I think the most fights at the table from my dad was, that I could not put my book down and read while eating. Later I realised just eat fast and you can go back to the book. When my kids were babies this was also difficult because they always wanted to talk to you and play, so I sat them down nicely each with something nice to eat, and I would read my book out loud to them. They were still babies so did not understand a word, but enjoyed it tremendously. Today my daughter still loves reading, my son is so busy I don’t think he gets time but I still remember giving him the book Kane and Able to read. He just could not put it down and I knew just how he felt.

As a child my dad used to buy me the Readers Digest magazine, I read it from front to back and kept them because they always had these wonderful stories in them. Even at this age I remember the one about an old lady who lived alone and was very precise with all her things as she was blind. One day she was sitting at her kitchen table feeling on her watch what the time was and and the watch fell off her arm. She knelt down under the table, feeling around for the watch but could not find it. She got up and bumped her head very hard against the table. She sat for a few minutes and to her surprize she started seeing. She was very poor and could not afford a doctor. In those days eye surgery was not as easy as today. When she called her neighbour she said: “I can see!” Wow how wonderful her neighbour said, how did this happen?

She told her about bumping her head so hard looking for her watch. After sitting still for a few minutes she realised she started seeing. Her neighbour said we must find out how and she took her to the doctor. He told them that the bump had moved the cataracts in her eye and that was the reason she could see.

This was one of my favourite stories, and probably the reason why I still remember it. I think it is so sad if people don’t read anymore. My mother in-law drives us around the bend sometimes, but I get books for her in the library and that keeps her quiet for a while. She is 95 and still read without glasses. The books I get her are written in large letters. I cannot tell you how much it helps that the library gets these books for the older people. They are the best.
