This Tree Swallow is very similar to another common species in  our area the Violet-green Swallow. They are both dark above, white below swallows that are areal feeders, flying around with their mouths open and catching small flying insects.  They can be difficult to tell apart, and one of the differentiating field marks is that in the Tree Swallow the dark cap comes completely over the eye, so birders say seeing the "eye-in-the-dark" as a strong clue that we are seeing a Tree Swallow, not a Violet-green Swallow. In the Violet-green Swallow the white on the face reaches above the eye, so the dark eye can be seen as "in-the-white."
