Cholesterol is a lipid, a type of fat, and is essential for building cell membranes, producing hormones like estrogen and testosterone, and synthesizing vitamin D. It is transported through the bloodstream by lipoproteins, which are composed of fat and proteins. It has the nature of fats but it is not purely fats as it contains other constituents in it.

####Good Cholesterol - HDL

High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) is often referred to as "good cholesterol" because of its beneficial effects on heart health. HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood vessels and transports it to the liver for excretion. This process, known as reverse cholesterol transport, helps reduce the buildup of plaque in the arteries, lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Having higher levels of HDL cholesterol is considered beneficial, and it can be achieved through regular exercise, a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

#### Bad Cholesterol - LDL

Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) is known as "bad cholesterol" due to its role in the development of atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to the cells and tissues, but when its levels are too high, it can lead to the accumulation of cholesterol in the arterial walls.

The deposited cholesterol forms plaque, which narrows the arteries and restricts blood flow, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes. High LDL levels are often linked to an unhealthy diet rich in saturated and trans fats, lack of physical activity, and obesity.

#### Triglycerides

They are primarily derived from the fats we consume in our diet and are stored in fat cells for later use. Elevated triglyceride levels are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and are often found in conjunction with low HDL and high LDL levels.

## The Importance of Cholesterol Screening

It is quite important that we look at the benefits that lies in cholesterol screening. One thing that we need to know is that since cholesterol levels can be influenced by various factors, including genetics and lifestyle, it is crucial to undergo regular cholesterol screenings. I bet it that many of us can't remember the last time we did cholesterol screening. Per time it is advisable it should be done to know the state of cholesterol in your body system.

A blood test called a lipid panel measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Based on the results, healthcare professionals can assess an individual's risk of developing heart disease and recommend appropriate lifestyle changes or medications if necessary.

## Maintaining Healthy Cholesterol Levels

Lifestyle modifications play a central role in managing cholesterol levels .Some of these modifications are listed bellow:

1. Adopt a Heart-Healthy Diet: Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Let it be rich in all the 6 classes of food and maintain a well balanced diet per time.

2. Engage in Regular Physical Activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week to boost HDL levels and improve heart health. One thing about exercise or physical activity is that we might not see the importance immediately but as time goes on, it begins to help your health and body system

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Losing excess weight, if necessary, can positively impact cholesterol levels. There is a crucial need for you to maintain a healthy weight

4. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol Intake: Smoking lowers HDL cholesterol and damages blood vessels, while excessive alcohol consumption can raise triglyceride levels.

5. Consider Medication if Needed: In some cases, lifestyle changes may not be sufficient to manage cholesterol levels. In such situations, doctors may prescribe statins or other cholesterol-lowering medications.
