Though there are still Some of the common symptoms include: - Redness: One of the most apparent signs is the red or bloodshot appearance of the eye. - Watery Discharge: Excessive tearing and a watery discharge are typical symptoms of viral conjunctivitis. - Irritation and Itching: Affected individuals often experience itching and a sensation of irritation in the eyes. - Swelling: The eyelids may become swollen due to the inflammation caused by the infection. - Light Sensitivity: Photophobia, or sensitivity to light, can occur, making it uncomfortable to be in bright environments. - Foreign Body Sensation: Some individuals might feel as though there is a foreign object in their eye. ### Causes of Viral Conjunctivitis [Image Source](https://unsplash.com/photos/RdaKT5RtUk8) When it comes to Viral conjunctivitis, it is primarily caused by viruses, with adenoviruses being the most common culprits. These viruses are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected eye secretions or objects that have come into contact with the virus. Common modes of transmission which I believe you should look out for also - Touching Eyes with Contaminated Hands: If you touch your eyes after touching a surface or object that has the virus, you can introduce the virus into your eyes. - Close Contact with Infected Individuals: Viral conjunctivitis spreads easily in close-contact settings like schools, workplaces, and households. - Sharing Personal Items: Sharing items like towels, washcloths, or eye makeup with an infected person can also lead to transmission. ### Treatment and Management [Image Source](https://unsplash.com/photos/vqO_1fUCNxg) While there is no specific antiviral treatment for viral conjunctivitis, the condition usually resolves on its own within one to two weeks. However, several measures can help manage the discomfort and prevent the spread of the infection: - Hygiene Practices: Regularly washing your hands and avoiding touching your eyes can reduce the risk of spreading the infection. - Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the eyes can alleviate discomfort and help in keeping the eyes clean. - Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can provide relief from dryness and irritation. - Avoidance of Contact Lenses: It's advisable to avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection clears to prevent exacerbating the condition. - Isolation: Infected individuals should avoid close contact with others to prevent the spread of the virus. - Consultation with a Healthcare Professional: If symptoms worsen or persist, seeking medical advice is recommended. ### Conclusion Viral conjunctivitis is a common and highly contagious eye infection that can cause discomfort and disrupt daily activities. While it can be inconvenient, the good news is that it typically resolves on its own with time. Practising good hygiene, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and taking measures to manage symptoms are essential steps to prevent the spread of the infection and ensure a smoother recovery. If you suspect you have viral conjunctivitis, consulting a healthcare professional can guide appropriate management and care. ## REFERENCES SOURCES [Source 1](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pink-eye/symptoms-causes/syc-20376355) [Source 2](https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/eye-health-conjunctivitis.)
