 This weekend, the wife and I had the pleasure of getting together with our friends…and…well…we all basically started a Cult. Multiple ones actually. Not literally as that would be insane, but in the sinister board game aptly titled Cult, by Cryptozoic. I’ll start off by saying that the game definitely has a lot of moving parts to it and took a bit of time to fully understand and grasp everything, but once did, we were in business and all had a blast. There were 5 of us playing and you start off by choosing your God. There are 3 ways you can achieve victory over the mortal meat puppets you may be playing with. One is to build 5 Alters for your God on the various spots throughout the board. The second is to incite 4 Fanatical Mobs. Lastly, you can also trounce by Summoning your God twice. Any one of those will see you victorious. The basic idea is that each Cult Leader you are playing with has control over several Priests. Each round, those Priests will be placed throughout the boards various locations in an attempt to win the bonus or prize that each spot has access to. For example, some locations pay out coins which is needed for certain tasks, while others may provide a card that can give your Leader a bonus or perhaps even a way to screw over a different Leader. Then there are deeper and more complex bonuses to capture which allows you to work towards the keys to winning. You can gain or sacrifice followers, add more Priests to help the cause, or snag the ever so coveted Supremacy Card which temporarily allows you to either power up your Priest to ungodly levels, or gifts you with a massive perk for the round. The Supremacy Card was a key point of my specific strategy and I had possession of it throughout several rounds. Divine…  My initial strategy was to go for the building 5 of the 5 Altars. At the end of the game, I had 4 and was soooooo close to the 5th and final. But I ended up with 4 Mobs anyway which clinched the win for me over the lowly plebs I was sharing the table with.  My win…was solely due to of having some luck in choosing a specific card which allowed me to win the prize at location 11, even if I technically lost it that round. All I had to do was have a presence there…so I built an Altar there to allow me that delicious perk of gaining a Mob at the cost of sacrificing 2 followers for the last 4 rounds. No brainer, and that alone secured me the W in the end.  There were a couple of close calls with my bud Bill almost taking it a few rounds prior. Luckily my greedy wife had a card in which we would have to fork over some $$$ anytime we won in a specific location. That action resulted in seeing a Happy Pre Victory Bill to be converted into a dejected failed Leader who was too poor to win it when it counted. That was the opening I needed. I prayed to the one and only True God of FAFNIR, and he answered ever so benevolently.  We are getting together again towards the end of the month for another game night in which this will be set up once again. I look forward to FAFNIR striking its vengeance down on these non believers to show that we…are walking the chosen path.  You can read more about Cult below!
