US multinational financial services corporation American Express (AMEX) has appeared to join the traditional finance entities publicly criticizing cryptocurrency. As social media users noted October 15, the company recently “promoted” a post by Bloomberg’s TicToc Twitter-based news portal which claimed the cryptocurrency industry “is using more energy than all the world’s electric vehicles.” While the tweet was from an independent publication, Twitter users were quick to point out that American Express paid Twitter to have the tweet promoted. It came as a surprise as the only reason for AMEX to promote the tweet is because it sees Bitcoin as a threat.
