Why would you want an Amazon Echo? Is it safe from hackers?

So I heard about the sale and now lots of people own these devices. I know someone who has Google Home and loves being able to ask it what the traffic is like on his way to work, but I'm quite happy checking my phone. I don't mind tapping my iPhone to ask Siri to call home, but the idea of a device connected to the Internet that is listening for every word spoken in my house worries me a little too. In this day when cybersecurity is rife do we really want to pay for devices that could potentially allow others to spy on them? When I think about Gmail, I constantly get advertisements on my account offering me things I have just bought or holidays in places I have just been to. I have obviously authorised Google by using their free email service, to troll through everything I have written and to take customers' advertisements and place them where they may have some context. It wouldn't take a big step to have that data mined to find criminals or terrorists but how far do you take that and at what point is it a massive invasion of privacy and in some countries potentially risking your life or your freedom if they decide to hack your home to see if you are for or against their regime? Am I just being a Luddite?
