I would like to start this post with a disclaimer: I am just a Farmer. I am not trying to give any investment advice. I am just a Farmer telling it like I see it. Junk silver in the US is any dime, quarter, half-dollar or dollar coin made before 1964. These coins were made with 90% silver. With the exception of half-dollars from the years 1965-1970 these were 40% silver. Now that the definition is out of the way let me tell you why I enjoy obtaining what I call “real money”. There is just something very familiar for us Americans when we hold coins like this dime. Our whole life we have been told that is money and we can use it to purchase anything we want. As I have researched and dove into what makes money and how it is used and the history of money from the beginning of time, it totally amazed me that come to find out all our American fiat currency today is actually not really money but a debt note from the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Reserve is actually not even a part of our government. The topic of the Federal Reserve is very interesting but not what this post is focused on. Please take the time to research it if you haven’t already. With all that said, from my research of history and every civilization that has graced this earth, they have all had one thing in common. That is, from the beginning of time gold and silver have been used as money. Silver even more so than gold. Please do not take my word for it but do some digging on your own. It will truly amaze you to find out that what is in your wallet and in your bank account is not by definition money. Every $1 face value of pre 1964 dimes, quarters, half-dollars or dollar coins contain roughly 0.715 troy ounces of silver. What is really cool is no matter if it is 10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 half dollars or even 5 dimes and two quarters, for every dollar face value you will end up with 0.715 troy ounces of silver. This standard really helps when figuring out just how much silver these coins actually contain. Another reason I really enjoy these coins are because they are relatively easy to obtain. Most pawn shops or coin shops will have some for sale. They are also easy on the wallet. At current spot prices a silver dime is worth about $ 1.20, a quarter is worth $3 and a half dollar is worth $6. This makes it easy to accumulate these coins as the cost is not outrageous. My favorite way of obtaining these coins is by hunting for them. You can still find them in circulation today here in America. They can be hard to find but they are out there. I have had my best luck hunting half-dollars as they are not circulated near as much as dimes and quarters. I do not know if one day these silver coins will be worth a lot or not, but what I do know is that for 1,000s of years silver has been used as money and they do hold their value much better than the American fiat currency. My favorite example of this is that in 1964 a gallon of gas cost you one silver quarter or 25 cents. Today that same silver 1964 quarter will still buy you a gallon of gas, as it is worth $3.00. This simple illustration shows that that silver quarter held its value because the in 1965 that quarter was no longer made with silver and it might have bought you a gallon of gas back in 1965 but today in 2018 that non silver quarter will not even come close to getting you a gallon of gas. These are just the random thoughts this Farmer was contemplating today. Hope you all enjoyed them and if you are here in America keep your eyes peeled for those silver coins. Have a great day.
