My wife and I were sitting at home last night getting ready to watch the Superbowl when she suddenly reached over to me with her phone held out.  I notice that she was on Facebook and she was asking me to read a post that one of her old friends had created.

Basically, they were asking about NFTs.  Things like how you create your own and other general information like that.  This was before the Superbowl even started, aka before that bouncing QR code showed up and grabbed everyone's attention.  

On a side note, I think that was a pretty genius move by Coinbase.  It is too bad that they didn't have the infrastructure to support the masses of trusting people who scanned the code.  The fact that people would blindly scan a QR code has me a little concerned.  I don't know if it speaks more to Coinbases marketing skills, or the lack of common sense by the general public.

Anyway, I am always more than happy to talk to people about crypto and NFTs, and my wife knows that.  She had already mentioned to the person that I was involved with them.  She then had her private message her email address so I could reach out to her individually.  I noticed that this ladies brother in law mentioned a YouTube person named Gary Vee or something like that.  I don't do much around Youtube, but I am sure maybe some of you have heard of him.

So I reached out to her via email and started trying to figure out what I wanted to say or more specifically where I wanted to start.  That's when I realized just how complicated the task really is.  

A lot of people have maybe heard of NFTs, they have probably even heard of cryptocurrency or more specifically blockchain, but they don't actually realize the two are connected.

What could have been just a quick reply to this lady turned into three quite long emails.  I apologized for throwing a bunch of info to her all at once, but I didn't feel it was fair to only give her half the information.

I feel like just starting with NFTs and not talking about all the underlying stuff in the background is like opening a book halfway through and just starting to read.  It might answer your question, but likely won't make any sense.

Here is a good example:  I do most of my NFT stuff on WAX.  That is what I am comfortable with, so that is what I presented to her.  I had to point out that a lot of the crazy numbers she likely sees tied to NFTs are happening over on the ETH side of things.  Of course, then I had to explain that the gas fees are so high on ETH it makes it prohibitive for new users to do much over there.  

That in turn led to me having to explain the difference between proof of work and proof of stake.  Do you see what I mean about things kind of snowballing?  

It is a slippery slope trying to explain one specific thing in blockchain without talking about all of the other things that go on behind the scenes.  

I gave her some resources.  I let her know she can reach out to me anytime because one explanation always seems to lead to infinitely more questions in blockchain.  I think I left her in a good place though.
