Let's kick off the weirdness with this shot of a banana slug I came across while hiking in California last month.

This has got to be one of the strangest animals I have seen in real life. It's as big as my shoe and really does look like a rotten banana on the forest floor. It's the second largest species of slug in the world, and also happens to be the school mascot of UC Santa Cruz. Imagine running out onto the field as people chant for the slugs.

#weirdwednesday was inspired by a lot of the other great creativity challenges going strong on steemit, such as the colorchallenge, steemitphotochallenge, monochromemonday, sunthursday, and more.

Like those great challenges, the point is to give some motivation for posting every week, inspire creativity, and start conversations. While I've only mentioned photo based challenges, #weirdwednesday is open to all forms of expression, because everyone has something weird to show/say/do.

Thanks to @uwelang, @old-guy-photos, @kalemandra, @jamtaylor, and others for starting the challenges above and getting the community creating. I hope that this weekly challenge will do the same.

#weirdwednesday was also inspired by the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz here in Austin, that shows totally bonkers films every week that you won't see anywhere else. And of course how could I not be influenced by the unofficial motto of my city, "Keep Austin Weird."
