So, I paid a friend of mine a visit today, he had traveled for the holidays and had only just returned. So I went to say hi and take all the ‘bread’ he returned with before some other people beat me to it. Anyway, he lives in a two-story building and his place is on the top floor. While I was there, I stepped out on the balcony and looked out over the area.

It gave me a bird’s eye view of his neighborhood. I was able to see the roofs of other houses, and when I looked downward, I could see people walking about on the streets below, going about their duties and concerns. They were just minding their business as I made it my business to look at them.

And while I was at it, something struck me.

As different as we all were facially, that was just how we were different in our minds. All of us may be in the same area, walking on the same road and boarding the same bus, but what is going on in the minds of all of us is very different. It is highly unlikely that two people will ever think the same thing.

When you see people in a crowd, among that crowd, there will be the happy people, the sad ones, the people who are angry, the ones who are depressed and the list can go on and on. You can never really know the depths of a person’s mind just by looking at them. This will lead you to make assumptions that are going to end up being wrong.

When we all meet on the road, we all are equal. Either we are jostling for bus or we are battling against traffic, everyone is looking out for their own end. We have no idea the kind of baggage a person had to face at home before they stepped out, and we have no idea the state of mind they had when they decided to come out. And honestly, we don’t care. All we are concerned about is our own well-being and if we happen to see anyone that tries to come between us and our well-being, there will be hell to pay.

This reminds me of a story I read online one time about a person who had gotten on a bus, but he had been so tired that he fell asleep. And while sleeping, he had rested his head against the shoulder of the woman next to him. Of course, we can deduce that he had a rough day at work, or maybe a bad day. And we don’t know what kind of environment he was returning to for the night, so maybe he was trying to grab a shuteye when he could because he didn’t know when next he would get it. I don’t know for sure, I’m just voicing my thoughts.

But then, we have to talk about the woman next to him. We also don’t know anything about her. Just because she was not tired or stressed out did not mean she had an awesome day, she could also have been going through a tough time at that moment. It was very possible that she was at a low point at that time and just didn’t want to be alone. But our sleeper’s head was ruining that for her. Well, I guess we will never know.

So, my dear friends, what am I trying to say here?

We should never take the facial expressions of people and use them to decide how we would treat them. Many people are suffering and smiling, they are going through a lot but mask their pain with a dazzling smile. And you won’t be able to guess because you believe that the smile means they are good and fine.

I am not saying that you should go out of your way to be nice when treating people. No, I am saying that you should learn to afford everyone the basic courtesy they deserve. Treat everyone with respect and goodwill, have a smile for them, and let them know that they are important. Try to make sure that everyone that comes into contact with you feels your positive energy.

You might not notice it working, but I can assure you that it will surely be working. People prefer to be around those who give positive vibes, and if you are one of them they will always be with you. This applies to all areas of life as well, let us try our best to treat everyone with kindness, goodness, and love.

After all, these things don’t cost a dime.
