It was when I really started looking at today’s topic as one that I would make a post on that I realized that it was more or less asking us to sell ourselves. Yeah, we are tooting our own horns, blowing our trumpets. Whichever string of words best describes it.

I have no problem with it though because personally, I am the kind of person that believes in praising oneself. If you feel you are good in something or in a particular area, there is no point in keeping quiet about it all in the name of being humble. There has been no instance where that kind of humility paid the bills.

So, do I have characters that I feel are worthy to emulate?

The truth is, when I think about it, it is quite difficult for me to come up with an answer. Most of the things I do, I do them just because it is what I want to do. Everything that I am involved in right now is a matter of choice, I am at this point in my life because of the choices I had made in the past. And when I was making these choices I was not thinking of people looking up to me and emulating me. I was just doing my thing. And to date, that is still something I do.

I do not live up to anyone’s expectations. I have come to realize that humans can be quite insatiable when it comes to laying expectations on others, and they can quite as easily lay blames. For those who know me personally, I do things because I want to. I do not try to impress anyone or do things to oppress anyone. All that kind of lifestyle comes with a form of stress I am never in the mood for. After all, if no one is expecting anything from you, then there will be no way to disappoint them.

Another thing I do is take responsibility for my actions. When I know I have a duty, I carry it out to the best of my ability. I also have no qualms when it comes to apologizing when I realize I have done wrong, I always own up to my actions. You might not be surprised to know that there are people who avoid apologizing like the plague. And the annoying thing is that such people are usually chief troublemakers.

Well, shifting to my work ethic, I think one thing people might find worth emulating is that I am a sucker for routine. I thrive when there is routine and a carefully laid out plan of action. That is why when I rarely take impromptu trips and when I travel, it takes me some time to get my groove on. I have a timetable that I follow religiously and I use it to plan out my day in terms of working, chores and relaxation. That way, I know what I am going to do next even when I am still involved in one activity.

Although, while I love having routines, I am also very flexible and fluid with my time. I can make quick changes to my plans if something urgent were to come up. By shifting some activities and squeezing in something else, there were times I was able to accommodate an activity I had not previously planned for.

Honestly, I have been thinking hard about the things that I felt made me stand out from the rest, and I just came up with these. But when you look at them you realize that they are pretty much average for everyone.

Most of the time, I have had to talk about my skill as a writer, either how I use it as a hobby or as a means of livelihood. When I am doing that one, it is something I can easily do. But talking about myself like this, trying to pinpoint all the good parts about me, well I guess I am not really doing a good job of it.

It is said that people will see you in a better light than you see yourself. So maybe there are some qualities I have been displaying that people feel are worth emulating, maybe some qualities even I do not really know about.

But then, one thing I have come to realize with being in the spotlight is that you can’t help but have eyes on you. That is after all, the point of the spotlight; so people can see you better. And also, with the spotlight, it is quite difficult to see others because many times the light might be too bright and so knowing those who are cheering you on and rooting for you might be difficult to tell from those who are booing you.

Seeing yourself in such a place, you have to become more self-conscious, watching your every move because there will be those who will be studying every single thing you do like a bible. There are those studying to emulate and there are those studying to criticize. You might never be able to tell one from the other.

And this is the reason we have to always be on guard. For me, before I do anything I ask myself that if this thing were to get out into the open and go viral, would I be able to own up to it in public? Or would I cower in shame? If it is not something I can own up to, then I won’t do it. There is a difference between making a genuine mistake because you thought you were doing something good and doing something bad hoping no one will find out.

As for me, I have employed a life of zero regrets. I do things my way and live life on my terms. Things are not as soft as I would have wished them to be, but I am steadily getting there. And I am in no rush. Part of the thrill of getting to the destination is in the journey itself.

So, my dear friends, I hope I have not bored you with these little details about me. I would feel really honored to be someone’s role model, to be looked at in that light, and be considered a pacesetter. But then, I won’t change my life for anything just to please them. Unless of course, I feel that change is necessary and it would do me good. I am sorry to say, but my happiness comes first before anything else. Only a happy person can be an inspiration to others.

And I hope that we all will have something that others will look fondly on us for and appreciate. Because whether we like it or not, our lives are all lessons and those around us are learning. They are either learning to be like us or learning not to be like us. Our characters will decide on which side of the divide they fall.
