Countries Avoiding Investing in Tech For Moral Reasons Will Lose Out in the Long Run
Morality is a weird thing, more specifically when it comes to a country. Because morality is usually something specific to an individual, clumping millions of people's beliefs together gets a bit messy. We see this especially in countries that tend to focus more on individuals than the collective, one example of which is the United States. We are coming to a point where there are many moral boundaries that are going to need to be crossed in order to advance technology and as it stands countries that are opposing them are losing out on precious advancements.

There are various different technological advances that we will probably encounter in the next 100 years that people arent going to feel comfortable with. Genetic engineering and artificial intelligence are two of the prime examples that come to mind when you bring up morality versus technology. Both these subjects are taboo and each have stark defenders and stark oppositions. When it comes to morality its really impossible to tell which one is right or wrong because that really comes down to someones specific ideas. However when it comes to the goal of retaining power, there is only one clear answer.

The United States specifically has been very sheepish about funding genetic engineering and stem cell research publicly. This is mostly due to the morality and religion of many people who believe god created you the way you are or that god has a plan for you. This is not the approach we need to be taking if we want to retain our hold on technology and advancement that people have attributed America for. We have always thrived through the creation of new technology and this is no difference, moral obligations or not.

You can be sure that other countries with less of a moral hazard will be and are investing heavily in this type of technology. The question is, do you want to be the one holding your dick when the next breakthrough is made? I bet it didnt feel great being Japan when the United States dropped Nuclear bombs on them and they literally could do nothing. These are the potential dangers we could face if you dont invest in technology as a defensive measure. Say there is a possibility of something like genetic super soldiers, or AI made to constantly hack and sabotage in the shadows, do you really not want to create defense for something out of morality?

Someone is always going to make the technology, good or evil, the only way to fully defend yourself is to create it as well and understand how it works. Understanding will give you the power to defend yourself from it and the benefits its brings. There are people who thought electricity or cars were morally wrong, but the majority eventually gets over it. If we wish to succeed we need to sometimes deal with the morally grey parts of new technology and potentially get our hands dirty.
