I just found another reason why the current curation reward algorithms are problematic: currently as a curator you have to pass on almost all quality posts, because it's not an optimal opportunity to get acceptable curation rewards, and let's face it, a lot of people are here to make money. That's the exact opposite of the desired behavior. Currently you have to pass on a quality post if:
* There are way too many votes in the first few minutes
* There are almost no votes after hours

Sometimes you would really like to reward the author, but you just can't because it's so disadvantageous to do so. A desired situation would be that both parties are rewarded when a curator votes on quality content, regardless. Currently you can't really up-vote friends or posts you really want to reward, because voting power is scarce and/or it might cost you money.
