 The El Grande Baluarte of Boljoon  is now used as a bell tower and is one of the tourist attractions of Boljoon. The tower’s lower floor also served as the prison cell. The inner walls of the has etchings/drawings counting the days someone had been incarcerated.

Fr. Julian Bermejo became the parish priest of the town of Boljoon in 1802. He is called by the Boljoanons as “El Padre Capitan”. This reference is due to his role in developing the defense system of the coastal towns against Moro and pirate incursion. He uses a system of several watch tower to act as lookout against invaders and the signal will be relayed from the towers to warn the villagers of the danger and prepare to hide in a safe place.

Until now the tower is well preserved with most of the structure is in its original form and materials.
