Witnesses are nodes that run on the Hive blockchain and produce blocks that contain transactions. Transactions are the actions that users take on the network, such as posting, voting, transferring, and so on. Witnesses are responsible for validating signatures and timestamps by using Proof-of-Work(PoW). PoW requires witnesses to solve complex mathematical problems to create new blocks. The first witness to solve the problem gets to add the block to the blockchain and receive a reward in HIVE tokens.

However, PoW is not enough to ensure the security and performance of the network. As more users join Hive, the demand for computing power increases. That’s why Hive uses another mechanism called Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) for governance. DPoS allows users to delegate their HIVE tokens to one or more witnesses of their choice.
