The wallet is our bank account but, unlike the latter, we control our money! When we deposit our money in the bank, the money is not ours and we must continually ask the bank for permits to move part or all of the money. The operation is never free and it is never instantaneously as in the case of wire transfers which can take several days before the transaction is complete.

The blockchain is a revolution in the payment system: it allows transactions that are generally instantaneous and with small fees. Others like Bitcoin and Ethereum have different fees and speeds due to current scalability issues. But all cryptocurrencies provide users with their own wallet with private keys that only the user can know and is the only tool to access them.  Lost the keys, lost the wallet! 

It is a very simple speech and yet it is the cause of the greatest number of wallet losses. For example, it is estimated that 3.5 million Bitcoins, currently 130 billion dollars, are permanently lost in the wallets of many users who, especially in the first years when BTC had a low value, maybe some mistakes too have been made, writing the keys on a piece of paper that has probably been trashed. Today, owning the private keys of some wallets means having gold bars at home. We must be careful in the case and possibly not leave them on a piece of paper or even on the PC without any protection.

Unfortunately, an example happened to Stefan Thomas, a crypto enthusiast, who revealed that he had saved the private keys of a wallet in which 7,002 BTC are stored in an encrypted hard disk of the IronKey type. The problem is that it no longer remembers the password and the hard disk is set so that all data is deleted if 10 mistakes are made in typing the password. Stefan got his password wrong 8 times and at the moment decided to stop further attempts. Bitcoins are in there but perhaps he will never be able to recover them.

Purtroppo un esempio è capitato a Stefan Thomas, appassionato di criptovalute, che ha rivelato di aver salvato le chiavi private di un wallet in cui sono archiviati 7.002 BTC in un hard disk crittografato di tipo IronKey. Il problema è che non ricorda più la password e l'hard disk è impostato in modo che tutti i dati vengano cancellati se vengono commessi 10 errori nella digitazione della password. Stefan ha sbagliato la sua password 8 volte e al momento ha deciso di interrompere ulteriori tentativi. I bitcoin ci sono ma forse non sarà mai in grado di recuperarli.
