What is retention and how does it impact the quality of my curation

Hive was originally born as a blog in which authors publish posts and curators vote for them, obtaining rewards with a 50:50 formula between authors and curators. This mechanism underpins our blockchain and is an important part of our community. Each of us, therefore, uses their own Hive Power for a double reason: to support and reward the authors and to earn 50% of the vote cast. This guarantees the curators an income of around 10% per year. But have you ever wondered how much of the rewards distributed through your curation are actually retained by users? This process is also called ** retention ** and today it is possible to calculate it thanks to @elmerlin using an application created by himself. Very intrigued, I asked Elmerlin to calculate my retention rate and the figure was better than I expected: 82.56%. ___ All this means that over 80% of the rewards I distribute on Hive are still held by users in HP, and which they in turn have distributed to other users. In fact, the data indicates that out of almost 3100 HP distributed, 2556 HP are still owned by users. Not bad, really! #### What can we learn from all this? Very. Hive's well-being also depends on the users' ability to believe in the long-term project and accumulate HP obtained from post rewards to continue supporting other users, as well as preventing more and more $HIVE from being sold on the market. ___ Retention is therefore a good indicator to better understand which kind of author on average we support with our vote. There are many authors who write good posts but are constantly on power down. Personally I don't vote for authors who are constantly in power down, it is true that they provide a good contribution with content but also show that they have no interest in the project. Big curators like appreciator and ocdb have huge voting power, they try to best distribute it among a big number of users. This explains why the retention of great curators is lower. It would also be very useful to have some more details on retention, for example knowing the users who are constantly powered down. But I don't know if @elmerlin will be able to be that detailed.
