The idea of the universe being explainable in terms of numbers, arithmetic and geometry (mathematics) strictly began as far back as the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans - followers of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, one of the first theorems explicitly stated being the Pythagorean theorem and is popularly believed to have been discovered by Pythagoras himself. This theorem through the years underwent developments in terms of proofs and applications, and also laid grounds for other mathematical concepts. However in this article we shall be focusing on the mind-boggling facts of this striking theorem.



# It Was Not Discovered By Pythagoras

 Sorry to break your hearts folks, archaeological findings suggests that the Pythagorean theorem has been known to ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians (modern Iraq) for over 1000 years before Pythagoras was born.

As a matter of fact, there's still debate as to whether the Pythagorean theorem was discovered/stated by Pythagoras himself, this is because not much about his life is known and ancient Greek writings seems not to contain his discovery of the theorem.

# It Influenced The Discovery And Development Of Other Mathematical Concepts

Pythagorean theorem influenced the discovery of algebra and the further developments of number theory and geometry, this strictly began with the works of Euclid in his book titled "*Elements*" and Diophantus of Alexandria - sometimes referred to as "**the father of algebra**", in his book titled "*Arithmetica*". Pythagorean theorem also influenced the discovery of calculus, notably by Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhem Leibniz.


# Without It, Einstein Wouldn't Have Been Famous

The theory of general relativity is the modern and best theory of gravity which has passed many experimental tests and still counting, and it was proposed by Albert Einstein. The equations of general relativity houses what is called a metric/metric tensor which is the fundamental object of study in the theory and is because it captures all the geometric and causal structure of spacetime. From an equation perspective, the metric is Pythagorean.

The the theory of special relativity another of Einstein's theory has Pythagorean theorem at it's mathematical core, it possesses a metric (Minkowski metric) that is Pythagorean from an equation perspective. 

 His (Einstein) famous equation *E = mc²*, a consequence of special relativity wouldn't have been discovered by him if not for the Pythagorean theorem, the famous equation was derived from the "**four-momentum equation**" which is also Pythagorean.

Einstein was known to have loved geometry from childhood and he's known to have discovered his own proof of the Pythagorean theorem, his love for geometry seemed to have influenced him in his later years to reformulate the laws of physics from a geometric perspective.


# It's At The Core Of Modern Physics

Modern Physics is generally divided into two groups, namely classical relativity and quantum physics and we have discussed about how the Pythagorean theorem plays an important role in classical relativity ( special and general). Quantum physics on the other hand is the physics of the atomic/subatomic world and it's probabilistic in nature, without Pythagorean theorem quantum probabilities cannot be calculated.


# Without It, Your GPS Cannot Work Accurately

The GPS ( Global Positioning System) is used for navigation in modern times, but are we aware of the fact that the principles of special relativity and general relativity which have Pythagorean theorem at their cores  are used by the GPS ?
If  you aren't aware, now is the time to be.

What this indirectly means is that without Pythagorean theorem your GPS won't be able to pinpoint your location in spacetime accurately.


# It Is Used In Archaeology

During archaeological findings, the Pythagorean theorem is used to keep record of informations, especially locations of very important discovery sites.


Lastly, it is used in laying foundations of buildings, I believe some of us, if not most, are aware of this fact.
