Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to say how confused I was when working an event, at how much trash people willingly leave behind!

# Contemporarily Trashy

The other day I was at a work event and it had a lot of people. What the worst part about it was the fuckers left trash EVERYWHERE. These were highly skilled and very intelligent people, yet they can't throw away their fucking trash, in the trash barrels all over the place?! Argh that was obnoxious.

I know that not everybody was brought up well enough to keep their areas clean and respectful but in the day and age that we live in, 2023, you would think that people who would go to an event for work would at least be decent and respectful people to take their shit and when done with it, bring it over to the trash barrel?! I know it's asking a lot.. but damn was that annoying lol.

I was working at an event recently and it had about 70 people, 70 highly skilled and very smart people who were not a bunch of fools. There was a lot of things going on with the event which is fine, so there may be some wiggle room on excuses.. but for me, any time I am somewhere I am cognizant of my environment and respectful of where I am. If I get a water or bit of food from a place, I make sure to finish it if I can but if I don't finish it, I don't walk away from it without disposing of it properly if I'm not going to consume it again! These people though, they left trash freaking everywhere and it was pretty ridiculous.

It's one thing to leave a drink somewhere on a table, get up to go the bathroom or something, or have someone come over to you while you're walking to do something and get distracted. Typically it would be a good idea to go back to where you were and just get what you had for a drink so that you can finish it but there was also food at play. Some people left half eaten plates of food just on the tables, most of it cold by the time I saw it. I was thoroughly confused and annoyed at the behavior. I have worked these events plenty of times in the past and I see the behavior often but I don't know why this event stuck out to me, maybe because I was doing more to keep my environment clean than I have before? Hard to say but it was obvious..

I know that it's not necessarily a huge issue but for me, it kind of shows the lack of concern or care for other people if you can have a meal on a table or a few drinks like water bottles, cans of soda etc. but get up and walk away from it without returning to it, or taking the food and or beverage with you so you can finish it and throw it away. There is all kinds of talk of recycling, less waste and all kinds of other shit but there is certainly just a lot of hot air being blown around with that type of stuff and not as much action as one would think.

I don't know if I'm just being a pretentious pain in the ass but I was definitely surprised to see as much trash just laying around the place that I had to clean up just because I was aware of it. I will continue working these events here and there in the future so I will have to keep an eye on the level of trash at them. Will it be the same, better or worse than this event? That will definitely be something I am going to keep an eye on! I would like to think that it would get better.. but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will not lol. As long as it doesn't get worse, that's what matters!
